VLC 2.0 Win2000?

Postby vetegr » 20 Feb 2012 01:28

Does 2.0 run on Windows 2000 Pro SP4?
(Dell OptiPlex GX 400, Pentium 4 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM.)

If not, what's the last version that will?

I noticed in the Older Versions section that there is a 1.1.13, but it's in tar and other files that I don't know what to do with. Where might I find a normal zip version?

Thanks for your help.

No, it does not. Only 1.1.11 does.

Hi,
Although not directly supported, but with a little elbow grease, VLC 2.0 is usable on Windows 2000 with the aid of the 'Known Dll's' trick. This and this for details. If i recall correctly, the wrapped version (see links) of ws2_32.dll located in VLC's root is what's required.

MichaelMc,
Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried the "Known Dll's" trick. I placed the wrapped version of ws2_32 in VLC's root, but now I get an error that the WS2_32.DLL cannot be found in the dynamic link library. So I guess the next question is: What do I do now?

It's isn't as simple as placing the wrapped DLL in VLC's root. Along with a renamed copy of said system DLL placed in the configured 'Known DLLs' directory, a registry setting must be modified/enabled then a system reboot is required to take effect. Details of this should be in the included docs though.

This is not something I can recommend yet because I haven't tested it myself on a w2k box but several forums have posted that with kernelex for Windows 2000 VLC 2.0 does work and so does Firefox 13 nightlies, Java 7 Update 3, and the latest Flash. It might be a good idea to just keep on an eye on the project for now but I have used blackwingcat's customized Radeon drivers for Win2000 and they work flawlessly.

The latest English version for anyone interested is 13f. It's a Japanese site and you need to scroll down a little:

Hi All,
I went through the "Known Dll's" trick again, and got the error message again but noticed that it was looking for the “ws2_32_ORG.dll” not the “WS2_32.DLL”. I put a copy of the ws2_32_ORG.dll into the VLC root directory and tried VCL again.

It Works!

Thanks for the help.
