VLC 2.0.0 Audio stuttering issue [somehow solved]

Hello,

I've just updated to VLC 2.0.0 (from VLC 1.1.11). I'm running Windows 7 Professional SP1 X64 on an i7 2600, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti and I don't remember what motherboard. I'm using the onboard sound card. I'm regularly updating things through Microsoft Update.

I'm having issues with audio playback, with simple mp3 files.

On first run, the sound was awful. Everything was distorted, like overloaded speakers. I've searched the forum and changed the Tools > Preferences > Audio > Output > Output module, from 'Default' to 'Win32 waveOut extension output'. That brought the audio quality back to normal, but there is stuttering every 4 seconds. I've also tried with 'DirectX audio output' but the sound quality is awful again.
After changing each of the options I closed and reopened VLC.
I've also tried enabling GPU accelerated decoding (Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs > Codecs > Use GPU accelerated decoding) but nothing changed for better or worse.

Are there any ideas as of what might be wrong? I've never had any issues with 1.x versions of VLC, or any other program. Neither sound nor video issues.

I have the same issue using a Xonar D2/PM Audio card. Stutter every 3-4 seconds.

It's not hardware then.

With the previous version of VLC : no problems like this ever occurs.

I have to use the "Wave Out Win 32" because i want to be able to switch to S/PDIF when i watch a DVD.

When i let the "predefined" option : the sound isn't distorded but the stutter Stops. Unfortunatly i am unable to use the S/PDIF option.

What do you mean by "it has been fixed" ?

I can't select "A/52 - S/PDIF" in the scroll menu to bypass decoding from VLC directly to my Z5500's POD.


Anyway : back to the main title.


The previous version did not have this stuttering issue while using "Wave out Win 32". The stuttering disapear as soon as the sound is set to "predefined".

However : Been testing it with a .vob test file with Dolby Digital Sound. The sound isn't stuttering while using "SPDIF" because i think the decoding is taken by the POD and not by the software.

I've also tested it out with :

- DirectX sound - Predefined out : no problem but no S-PDIF bypass
- DX sound - Xonar Speakers blabla : stuttering back but S-PDIF is available

You should be able to have S/PDIF output in the preferences for DirectX.

The sound still stuttering after all option i tried :

- Default : No Stutters but can't select A/52 - S/PDIF in the scrolling menu "Audio, Audio Device > 5.1,Stereo, Mono "

- Wave Out Win 32 : Stutters every 3-4 seconds with standard videos (avi, mp4, flv, mpeg...) But the option "use S-PDIF if available" shows up in the Options, i can select A/52 - S/PDIF in the scrolling menu while playing a movie in Dolby Digital or DTS AND those movies appears to NOT stutter

- DirectX with Default Audio Device : No stutters but NO "A/52 - S/PDIF" in the scrolling menu for Dolby or DTS

- DirectX with (in my case) "Speakers : Asus Xonar D2 Device" : Stutters the same way, the option "use S-PDIF if available" shows up in the Options and A/52 - S/PDIF is available in the scrolling menu.

those Stuttering NEVER happened with the previous version.

Hi too have the same problem. Audio stutters every 3-4 seconds.

I have the Audio output module set to Standard (But also changing to Win32 or DirectX Output does not help)

Same problem here.

Asus mainboard P7P55D-E, using VIA VT1828S 8-channel High Definition Audio Codec.
Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, VIA audio driver 6.0.1.8700.
Result: VLC 2.0.0 portable interrupts every 4 seconds.

Now comes the interesting thing:
When running
- VirtualBox 4.1.8 on top of the above setup
- a Win7 Home Premium 32-bit VM
- VLC 2.0.0 portable in the VM
Result: The problem is gone!

Hi too have the same problem. Audio stutters every 3-4 seconds.

I have the Audio output module set to Standard (But also changing to Win32 or DirectX Output does not help)

Have rolled back the audio driver to the original one provided by Microsoft, 6.1.7601.17514, but no improvement.
Have changed sample rate and bit depth in the advanced properties of the playback device. 24/44100 shows a slight improvement compared with 24/48000.

Went back to VLC 1.1.11, but am willing to run further tests if someone comes up with an idea how to proceed.

Hello, op here.

I've just selected (again) 'Default' as Output module and set the audio volume to 100% and everything sounds just right. No stuttering, no 'overloaded speakers' effect.
I feel really stupid for not having tried that, but for the past few years (I kid you not) I've never touched the volume control in VLC, after initially setting it to 200%.
I've tested with a couple mp3 and a couple video files and they're playing just fine.

So, uhm, it's not a false alarm but I guess it's not that serious anymore...

I, too, have similar problem (audio dissappearing every few seconds and reappearing again).

Also, I'd like to point out that video recorded under VLC 2.0.0 with Shift+R hotkey is completly stuttering when played (so not only audio stutters but also video channel itself). I didn't do enough testing to confirm whether it happens everytime or not, I only checked it on 2 video files and both recordings where stuttering.

Maybe these two issues are connected.

I am also experiencing the audio stuttering issue.

Things I have noticed - Playing files with DTS, Dolby Digital, MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) or A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52) the audio will not stutter.
- Playing mp3, MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga) and FLAC will cause audio to stutter.

I too have only noticed these issues after updating to VLC 2.

HOWEVER, prior to updating I experienced another problem that has not yet been mentioned --> I use a Toshiba A660/07U (i7, nVidia GT330m, 8GB RAM) laptop as a HTPC. I have HDMI out to Denon Receiver/display and 3.5mm out to Onkyo receiver for music and outdoor speakers. I have VLC Output Module set to 'Win32 waveOut' and have 'S/PDIF' checked. I would usually alternate between devices by selecting the appropriate one as 'Default Device' in Windows sound settings. Output from VLC to 3.5mm does NOT work. I have played with the audio settings in VLC and I also tried resetting VLC settings, with no glory. ALL other programs will play perfect audio to either of the selected output devices.

I hope the information I have provided will aid in finding a solution to this issue.
