Switched from VLC 1.1.11 to 2.0 (Worse performance)

Postby b8196034 » 19 Feb 2012 13:41

Hey guys. So I just tried version 2.0. I ran an HD movie (720p), checking the task manager at the same time. VLC 2.0 uses 40 % of the CPU on average but the 1.1.11 used up to 15% ( Image ). Made the tests on the same video file, 720p HD video. Both versions had GPU acceleration enabled (without it the CPU gets to 80% in both version). Also, the GUI is not completely translated to romanian language, but I can help you with that.

The tests were made on a dual core CPU!

Cheers.

Can you try to deactivate the audio and compare again?

Well. The CPU usage on the 1.1.11 32Bit for a regular .AVI files seems to be under 5%, and for 720p is between 1-15%. I haven't tested 2.0 with other files but .MKV. Where can I download 2.0 without having to install it again? Thanks.

Use the 7zip.
Found it. What do you mean by "disable the audio" ? Should I turn the off the volume (in vlc, of course), or use some options from the "Preferences" ?

Disabled audio from Preferences>Audio. The CPU usage is almost the same as for the VLC 1.1.11. Maybe a bit higher. Also, tried 1.1.11 with and without audio, and the CPU usage is the same, I guess that's a good thing.

Can you reenable the audio and delete the libsamplerate_plugin.dll and restart VLC?

Videos that VLC 1.1 was able to play smoothly were stuttering in 2.0, removing the libsamplerate_plugin.dll fixed this for me. However performance is still worse than in 1.1 and 2.0 does not display a true black anymore with the default video output.

If you do not have a true black using nVidia, fix it in the Control panel.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problems.
I tried out with the "sintel" movie (www.sintel.org), the "1024x436" mp4 variant.

VLC 1.1.11 uses around 15% CPU power,
VLC 2.0.1 uses around 35-45 % CPU power.

YES: I turned the audio track off. This does not change the results at all.

PC is an Asus EEEPC Laptop, Atom N270 (1.6Ghz) CPU (yes I know that this CPU is pretty slow ;-)).
The playback in general tends to "stutter" with VLC 2.0.1 version.
The VLC 1.1.11 version seems to be quite smooth (no detectable stutter as far as I can tell.)

One more thing:
The VLC 2.0.1 video quality also seems to be worse than the VLC 1.1.11 one
(even if the VLC 2.0.1 one uses more CPU power).
The effect is, that the color smoothness (no idea what word would explain it better) is worse in VLC 2.0.1.
The sintel movie starts with a lot of white (snow covered mountains). With VLC 2.0.1 you see pretty strong "steps" in color instead of a smooth transition from very white to medium white. With VLC 1.1.11 I cannot detect the same problem, so the transition from very white to medium white looks much smoother.
Note: I checked the video settings and as far as I can tell they are the same for VLC 2.0.1 and VLC 1.1.11. So I use nothing extra (no post-processing, no de-interlacing,...)

Is there anything more I can tryout to help the diagnosis what happens ?
Is VLC 2.0.1 just using a different video decoder or is it the backend to display the video ?

cheers
lundril

Deleting that plugin worked for me, too. Has there been a bug report filed for this? It seems like there should be at least an option to disable resampling (assuming that's a useful feature to have on by default). Deleting a file is a workaround, not a fix.

Still, thanks. It's nice to finally be able to use the latest VLC instead of being stuck back on 1.1.11.

I'm still stuck on 1.1.11 too
For me it's the AAC audio that is crappy under Windows in 2.0.3, command line didn't work in 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 and I have now my hopes set on 2.0.7.
It seems audio is better and CLI works again under windows. I hope to compile a Windows version with another AAC version. Until now the Wiki didn't prove to bee 100% helpful.
