How to disable volume control with mouse wheel

Postby prhammer » 01 Aug 2010 07:40

I am using VLC to play a series of movies at a Film Festival. I need to disable the mouse wheel volume adjustment (so that the mouse wheel will not adjust the volume). It seems that I read that this preference had been added but I can't find it for the life of me.

The ability to create video playlists is a wonderful feature that is very helpful for this use. But I am worried about bumping the mouse wheel and blowing the house away with a big jump in the volume!

Thanks,
Ron

It's well hidden indeed. Go to the Preferences panel and switch to "all" at the bottom of the window. Then, navigate to the following sub-category on the left hand side: Interface -> Hotkeys settings -> Hotkeys. There you'll find the option "Mouse Wheel X-axis Control", which you can set to "Volume Control", "Position Control" or "Ignore".

Save the settings afterwards and restart VLC to let your changes take effect.

Thank you very much! I knew it had to be there, but I guess I just didn't see that last level down from "Hotkeys settings -> Hotkeys".

Great program. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into it.

I have set "Ignore" in MouseWheel x-axis Control, but why can't I disable the volume control and position control?

If I set "Ignore" in MouseWheel x-axis Control, it also disables the position control!!!
And if I set it to Position, the OTHER axis gets volume control....... grrrrrr
Sorry, but this is stupid. Why is it mandatory to have both or none enabled?
I want my trackpad controlling position with left-right gestures, but ignoring up-down gestures. Is it too much to ask??

I understand the need for such an option, however nobody implemented this so far, probably for 2 reasons:
1) we weren't aware of the need
2) nobody wanted to do that due to lack of time or whatever. Remembering that this is a volunteer driven projects, so most folks work on what they want to, only.

1) can easily by fixed by you by filing a feature enhancement report on http://trac.videolan.org/vlc :)
