My system-info: ubuntu 11.10 (newest v4l-dvb compiled and installed) , vlc v.1.1.12 , Installed devices: one and only WinTV-Nova-HD-S2 PCI TV-card (registered per "dmesg | grep dvb).
I would open with vlc my TV-card by frequenc and symbol-rate. "media"-->"open capture device"--> "capture mode=DVB"--> "DVB-Type=DVB-S"--> i filled in the transponderfrequency and the symbol-rate and then i pushed the button "play", after i becomed a message that "can't open this frequency" . I looked at the error console verbosity-level 2 with the following ....
