AVG reports virus when installing VLC

Postby robroy » 29 Dec 2011 13:34

Hi
I use windows XP and have been a user of VLC player for some time now, but recently had to do a system recovery. One of the last things I tried to re install was VLC player (from cnet). However AVG reported a virus during the installation, so I stopped it and made sure all traces of vlc were removed. I then came direct to videolan.org and tried again, same result, AVG warning 'THREAT DETECTED'
Anyone have similar problems? should I ignore the warning and allow the installation?
Thanks

VLC on C|Net Download.com is (was?) bundled with malware. Not only VLC but other software.
Anyway, don't download VLC from C|Net Download.com. Download it from the official site.

Hi
thanks for the reply but as I said I removed everything, and came to videolan.org but AVG picked it up here as well!

Possibly AVG picked up the threat on download.com, and then said that it is here too by associating the malware with the wrong part of the file?

I tried to download again from here with the same result, but instructed AVG to ignore, however after installation I attempted to play a video and AVG popped up immediately with the same 'Threat Detected' warning. So I have uninstalled the programme again!

At a loss what to do now as I much prefer the VLC Player to Windows Media PLayer.

Anyone have any idea what might be the problem here, is it an AVG Issue?

I am running AVG 2012.0.1901 with the update of 2011/12/20 15:42 (virus db: 2109/4711) and have no problem with the VLC nightly builds. You usually can send you threat detection (false alert) to avg through their interface.
