h.264 playback

Postby KWolf » 04 Jul 2005 20:06

Every time I play a video encoded with h.264, I get an error (one of the generic windows errors... send error to ms, dont send, etc). I can heard the audio playing, but I can't see the video. It used to work, I don't understand what happened for it to stop working now. I tried using a newer display driver, reinstalling VLC (erasing the program files folder and the one in application data), switching from .8.2 to the .8.3 testing builds... nothing has made it play h.264 video again. What can I do to fix this problem?

Also, when it did work before, it was very slow and choppy even though I had nothing else running. The same videos play fine with media player classic and ffdshow, with under 50% cpu usage. I'm on an Athlon XP 3000+.

Thanks in advance!

This has been discussed somewhere on the forum before. I had the same problem, but it seems to have gone away on it's own. Others were experiencing the problem too. Try some searches.

I just searched for 264 and AVC but with neither can I find someone with the same problem as me :(

Should I go on IRC and see if anyone can help there? I normally don't use it =\

You're not alone :) Just installed 0.8.2 on Win2K SP4 and it crashes when I try to play a video encoded with x264, the audio plays for a few secs (no video), then I get a generic "this application has caused an error" crash.
Media Player Classic plays it fine so I'll stick to that for the moment, but there definitely is a problem.

I'm not sure if i have the same problem too.

i've been trying to play some mkv files on windows and on Tiger
first my pc's specification is windows xp sp1 on AMD athlon xp 2500+ with 512MB DDRRAM
and my macintosh is Tiger 10.4.1 with 768 MB Ram

i've been trying to play the files which the guy who put it up said that the files were ripped from hdtv.

i can only hear audio.

no video in vlc on windows or macintosh..

i wonder if it is the same problem.

My files are in the MKV container format, but other MKV files with DIVX video encoding play fine. Should I just drop VLC and use something else? Because I really want to be able to play my h.264 video with this player..

Ok, I'll upload a sample (they're big, and I live in America so my upload speed sucks).

It's uploading... It will be done in about 2 hours.

The file name is: [a4e]Inu-Yasha_81[h.264].mkv

Ok, it finished while I was sleeping.

All of my h.264 files used to play in VLC (some really choppy though, even though MPC played those fine). I don't know why it doesn't work now.

you mind If I upload some samples to that address?..

I'm running tiger myself and am having the same problems.

0.8.2-test3 opens these files and plays them.. but with choppiness (especially in the pans).

theyre about 250 meg unfortunately.. but since it behaves like this with all VFR mkv's with H.264 i think it important it be dealt with.

filename is [Shinsen-Subs] Elfen Lied 05 [DVD][H.264][8511D9D4].mkv

This has to do with improper VFR (variable framerate) support with H.264 mkv files (possibly more?).

The splitter VLC uses is apparently not working properly.

From what i've been hearing the encoders of these vids have been using the "halli" splitter.. (which is win32 only).

This is cutting edge stuff, so i'll patiently wait for the VLC team to figure out a way to work in that particular splitter's functionality so the pans no longer chop and jerk.

use my sample (above) regarding this VFR problem.. it's an excellent example ... downright ornery =)

Heh, I'd be content to have it not crashing when playing h.264 before they fix the choppies. Still no word on this problem though, and it's been a while. So if this happens on my Windows XP and your Tiger... well ... wtf :/

Can't play h.264 material on my Tiger machine as well.
Would you like me to upload the video?
