1080p video but still image not as high quality

Hi there,

I have a 1080p mkv file I am viewing in VLC player that I need a few stills from however when I take a still shot the image created is not as good as the source video. I have tried using the still creation as a png but this still does not give me an exact still.

Any ideas would be great.
