Broken audio mapping

Postby mac_man_ad » 03 Nov 2011 02:35

Hi all,

Multi-channel audio mapping seems wrong in VLC 1.1.12 and 1.2.0-git under Lion 10.7.2. Playing the linked file with QTX shows the original file plays correctly, but VLC swaps some channels.

A test is to transcode the file with VLC and compare the transcoded file to the original in QTX. The original plays fine, while the transcoded exhibits the same odd mapping as playing direct in VLC.

As far as I can tell, VLC is opening the audio device successfully (no errors in the messages window) and reads the file as a 3f2r+lfe correctly.

My setup: Lion 10.7.2 through Griffin FireWave to Logitech 5.1 kit

Cheers, Andrew

Does it happen through S/PDIF too?

I am experiencing an Audio Mapping issue as well. The problem corresponds to the recent 10.7.2 update.
I have a MacMini, late 2010, connected directly to an AVR via HDMI. When playing content (tested against .mkv, .avi, .iso, mp4) with surround sound 3/2 or 5.1, DD or DTS via VLC over HDMI the front and rear speakers audio channels are reversed. The center channel is muted. The sub woofer (.1) is not effected. I was not experiencing these issues with Lion 10.7.1/VLC 1.1.11 (64bit) or 10.7.1/VLC 1.1.12 (64Bit).

In an effort to debug, I have removed all extraneous audio channels, sound flower, etc. Fixed Disk Permissions. Zapped the PRAM. Reinstalled iTunes. Deinstalled flash. Anything that could effect core audio has been removed or a fresh instance installed. I completely removed VLC 1.1.12 and reinstalled VLC 1.1.11 and tested against the same media and experience the same issue. I have tested the exact media(s) on MPlayer and MPlayerExtended and Perian via Quicktime with NO audio issues.
I have attempted the requisite changes in Audio Midi Setup to no avail. All other players and iTunes on the system are behaving normally.

I have not tested against S/PDIF.

I have only experienced this problem with VLC on 10.7.2. Again 1.1.12 worked normally on 10.7.1. This narrows down the cause to the 10.7.2 update.

I appreciate your attention to this issue. VLC is the best player for the Mac. No other player has the video and audio performance of VLC. Thank you for your efforts.

THanks a lot for the report. You should add this verbatim to trac.

For my particular case, SPDIF results in no audio. I suspect this is not a VLC issue, but my Firewave box.

main debug: VLC is looking for: 'a52 ' 48000 Hz 3F2R/LFE frame=1536 samples/1536 bytes

main debug: TIMER module_need() : 238.716 ms - Total 238.716 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 238.716 ms)

main debug: mixer 'a52 ' 48000 Hz 3F2R/LFE frame=1536 samples/6144 bytes

Thanks for looking into this,
Andrew

amaury.dg, so what is your setup? Are you using TOSLINK or what? Operating system version?

Come on, at least give them some scrap of information to work on or they'll never be able to fix it.

I have same problem with mkv and vanilla vlc install. Sound works fine in xbmc on same machine.

linux mint 12
vlc 1.1.12
toslink
a/52 over s/pdif
codec: DTS Audio (dts)
channels: 3f2r/lfe
sample rate: 48000hz
bitrate: 1344 kb/s

I have lfe and also seem to have the 2 back working but nothing in the front speakers except movie music.
