VLC player isn't my default player anymore (Please read!)

Postby Mogwai_ » 26 Oct 2011 19:39

I know it's a strange topic title.

Anyway a friend of mine bought a macbook. So he downloaded the VLC player changed it into his default player. But when he turn off his macbook and starts up again the default player is quicktime again. Also his macbook doesn't recognize his VLC player as a program but as a device when he starts up his macbook again.

Any solutions?

Thanks in advance!

VLC downloads as a dmg file which is a disk image or virtual disk drive if you will. Double-clicking it mounts it to the desktop, but it wouldn't be mounted the next time the computer is restarted. The VLC app needs to be copied to the Applications folder to actually install it. Once there the mounted disk image can be ejected and then any settings to make sure VLC Player is the default should stick.

To re-associate your video files to open with VLC as the default player:

Right click on the video file.
Choose "Get Info" (or command I)
Expand the "Open with:" and choose VLC in the drop down
Click "Change All"
Confirm
