How to specify the filename / directory for a recording

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How to specify the filename / directory for a recording

Postby steve333 » 26 Oct 2011 00:53

I am using VLC 1.1.10 and had some trouble trying to record a video stream to a file.

After a lot of digging I found the "record" button in the advanced view of the main window which permits me to record a live stream to a file.
I could find no reference to recording in the documentation.

Whatever I did then it always recorded to a default file name located in my users home directory.
(In my case I'm using Windows 7 so it puts the file in the "My Videos" folder.
This may be reasonable enough for most people, but I wanted to at least specify the file name.)

I did find the Advanced Preference Setting "Record directory or filename" under "Input/Output Codecs".
However setting this seemed to have no effect.

After wasting quite lot of time fiddling with all the other things which might have been wrong I discovered that VLC does not pick up the new preference setting until I stop the Network Stream and then re-start it.

I was assuming that simply stopping and restarting the recording would be sufficient to update the file location.

Can I suggest:
1) Some clarification as to the operation of the "Record directory or filename" option.
A short paragraph on how to record a stream would help.

2) Preferably the filename should be updated from the saved preferences each time the Record button is pressed, rather than having to kill the Stream and re-Open it.

3) The preferences for Recording could be re-organised and moved to the "Video" preferences menu.
They could be arranged like the "Snapshot" preferences, which seem much easier to find and more intuitive to me.

4) It would be nice if there was just a simple option in the "Open Network Stream" menu to specify a file (and format) to record into.

My apologies for posting incorrectly eariler when I hadn't discovered how it worked.
