How to watch movies or live streams on VLC?

I have been searching and reading a lot but I feel like I don't comprehend all the VLC wiki stuff docs online and it also seems to be outdated. What is all that stuff anyways and where in the heck do you type it? As you can see I don't know anything about VLC :} Can anyone tell me is it possible to play live online movies on VLC? and if so, how in the world is done? I keep pasting the url but it doesn't work. I feel there is something i need to configure for it to work, but I don't know what. I don't even know if this is the right forum to post. I apologize ahead of time if this is the case.
