VLC doesn't show up subtitles, nor any other "words".

Postby Dames » 14 Aug 2011 21:47

Sorry if it was already here, but I am really sleepy so I didn't look out for it too long. (First two pages of this article/subforum)
As title says. VLC doesn't show anything when I am "turning" volume higher or when i want to change Deinterlace (or what it is). I would get over it but it doesn't show up subtitles either (Or neither? Sorry for bad English). I'm from Czech republic if it somehow matters. I don't even remember when it started but I think it was when I downloaded 1.1.11.0 version. When I noticed that all those things were missing i get back to older version but there was the same problem. Any idea how to get out of this? I'd like to watch new Futurama but I don't want to translate it myself, I'm too lazy.
Thank you for your answers.

Change the fonts in preferences.

I had Arial and tried other 5 fonts, nothing happens. I knew it won't be that easy, everything that f****s up to me is permanent or difficult to repair. :/

I had the same problem. Probably caused by settings from old versions. This worked for me: Go to setup and reset all settings by reset button, restart VLC.

And how exactly could I do that? I've never noticed there is an reset button/option.

Bump
EDIT: Nevermind, I'll use Media Player Classic, although VLC is far better in my opinion. But hey, it ain't end of the world, right? So if no one has any idea what to do, you can lock/delete. Thank you.

the same for me here. Even after a fresh install of everything (windows and no apps or games yet), not a single line of text from VLC.
Changing the font to anything but Arial makes them reappear!
But back to the Arial family (Arial, Arial Black, Arial condensed...), NO GO.
Neither the video title at the beginning of play, nor any subs are shown.
Some ppl here describe a freetype logfile, where is it, and how do i turn it on? maybe it enlights me of the Arial problem?

AFAIK freetype doesn't create log file. Only Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) does logs.

aah, tnx for the hint!

and here is the error:

freetype debug: Using Arial as font from file C:\Windows\Fonts\C:\Program Files (x86)\Videotools\Smart Cutter\DefArial.ttf
freetype error: failed to load font file C:\Windows\Fonts\C:\Program Files (x86)\Videotools\Smart Cutter\DefArial.ttf
main debug: no text renderer module matching "freetype" could be loaded

Ok, Problem found and solved!

To the VLC Dev team: the vlc error is that vlc reads the registry for fonts, thats ok so far.
But vlc assumes that the entries only contain filenames from the %WINDIR%\fonts directory. It just prepends this path to the entry to read the file.
THATS WRONG!
Entries also can also contain complete paths, windows itself then "forgets" to prepend the standard font path.
VLC better should copy this behaviour
