VLC Icon doesn't show (.exe and when video is being played)

Postby throstur » 19 Oct 2011 01:46

I always get the wrong icon in the start menu, I just get the blank white ".exe" icon. It's very ugly and really ruins my experience on my otherwise very ergonomic layout. I was wondering if there was any way to fix this issue? I tried downloading VLC from the official download site and reinstall it but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Check/Change the icon in the shortcut Properties

Point it to ...\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

If this doesn't work use (for the icon only) ...\VideoLAN\VLC\uninstall.exe

You can also use: ...\VideoLAN\VLC\http\favicon.ico

I'm not sure if you misunderstood me or just didn't read my post. The problem is not with shortcuts, I have already pointed them to favicon.ico, the problem is with the .exe file itself. The .exe file does not have any icon and since it is a compiled executable I don't really know how to add an icon to it (without downloading rubbish).

Issue is prolly in your Windows icon cache. (you can test this out by renaming vlc.exe to vlc2.exe)

Thank you, is there a knowledge-base documentation article on fixing this cache?

EDIT: I was unable to even find the Iconcache.db file in my Local folder, what should I do? (vlc2.exe fixed the problem for that one executable).

Of course I read the post.
In post #1 You say "I always get the wrong icon in the start menu" and start menu contains shortcuts. (In post #1 You don't say anything about the .exe file itself.)
Using another file for the shortcut icon usually fixes it (by using another/new place in Iconcache).

And how you can say that "The .exe file does not have any icon" (?) after it is clearly shown in my screenshot?
(and now you know the icon is/was there in the .exe itself (visible to you after renaming the file and this way using new place in Iconcache))

Get this small program:
IconsExtract v1.47 (only 33 KB .zip)
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iconsext.html

It allows you to view/extract (save as .ico) icons from EXE/DLL ... files.

Thanks for your input and I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, however, I wasn't talking about your .exe file at all. I was talking about mine. When I navigate directly to VLC's folder, vlc.exe does not show any icon - only the stock image.

When I navigate directly to VLC's folder, vlc.exe does not show any icon - only the stock image.
But your file is the same as mine (and everybody else's)!

(and why you don't see the icon was explained already;
e.g. if you copy your vlc.exe file to Flash stick and look at it on another computer you will see the icon.
Or you can extract the icon from your vlc.exe file to .ico file by IconsExtract (link above))

To check that the file is the same - generate MD5 checksum:

"Mine" file vlc.exe 1.1.11.0 have MD5 checksum:
b0fd3872f6958aa93d6a7103ac01852c *vlc.exe

Regardless or whether or not it HAS an icon (which ir certainly does), it doesn't show it, which is the essence of the discussion.

Do you still have this problem??

Didn't you follow this suggestion?:
http://smallvoid.com/article/windows-icon-cache.html
that page has many fixes, that might work.

If you think that IconCache.db do not exist on Vista/7 - here it is:

Image

Of course IconCache.db is hidden file (as shown by ! and h above)
And AppData is hidden folder
And your user name is not A n L
And your Windows disk/partition is probably not e: but c:
