Only audio on some wmv files

I have some wmv files and only the audio plays the video does not. I have VLC media player 1.1.11. This is what MedioInfo shows on one of the files.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file, 50 MB should be enough, to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Multiupload.com, so it will upload the file for you to several other hosts, and then post the link to the file here.

I too have been experiencing this with WMVs in 1.1.11 recently. At level 0, there is nothing logged, but at 1 it shows the following:

It happens with all WMVs, for example this one just exhibited it. However it only fails in Windows 7; in XP, the same copy of VLC plays WMVs just fine.

I can't reproduce the issue. This file is playing fine with every PC I've tried, including three different PC's running Windows 7.
It must be something wrong with your system. Reset VLC preferences and cache first and if it still doesn't work then update your audio and video drivers and also DirectX 9 (yes, DX9).

What’s strange is that Explorer successfully shows a preview of the WMVs in the Preview Pane; it only fails when playing the video.

For the record, I have removed WMP in the Optional Features dialog. However, I have done the same in XP, but that still plays WMVs without problem, so unless removing WMP in 7 also removes the codec for WMVs (which would then beg the question why it is able to render a preview), then it cannot be that.
