HELP PLZ: VLC player is stuck in full screen

Please help me! I have recently installed VLC version 1.1.11 on my laptop running XP-SP3. My laptop is recently formatted so I may be missing software. When I play a video (any video file type) it automatically plays on fullscreen. Playback is perfect but I am unable to close fullscreen (Esc f, F11 are non responsive) and my mouse movements do not show playback bar. I cannot see a cursor and therefore I must wait until playback has ended to navigate my computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, restarted and defaulted settings all to no avail. VLC worked perfectly previous to my recent format so I feel that it is probably software related. Does VLC require any additional software not included in the installer bundle? Any help would be appreciated. Dom
