Covert VLC to MP3

Hi, I have been trying to convert some VLC files to MP3. I go through the process until I start to see the countdown start with a given time of say one hour. the counter go's for approx 60 seconds or so and then stops. Can anyone help?

If your converting files with vlc select "display the output" and see what happens.

Also, just to be clear there is no such file called vlc. You might be thinking of generic or unknown files.
