Subtitles will not stay off

Postby aybiss » 27 Mar 2011 10:54

I recently came across some H264 files with embedded subtitles.

VLC will not be told to leave these off. It doesn't remember between files and doesn't remember for files I've already played.

Can we have a default subtitles setting that includes 'Disabled' please?

This appears to be fixed in the latest version. Now I can be checking out 'Seven of Nine' instead of reading those distracting subtitles!

Thanks guys, boom shanka.

which option do you select to shut them off by default? i just grabbed the latest version of VLC, and I can't seem to get subtitles for .mkv files to stay off by default. every time i play a file i have to turn them off manually.

That's because the subtitle is marked as on in the demuxer.

In the preferences, force the "none" language for subs.

thanks for the reply. i checked the .mkv in MKVMerge and the subtitles are not marked as forced.

were you referring to the preferences within VLC? when i type "none" in the 'Prefered subtitles language' box, it doesn't change anything.

i might be missing something...

so there's no way within VLC to disable all subs?

Go to the preferences and select "Dummy" as the text render module. That will effectively kill all text-based subs. You will still get the DVD ones (bitmap), but I guess you don't care.

Of course, there is no way to turn off subs that are "burnt" into the video.
