Playing DTS audio files

Postby rtboyce » 20 Sep 2011 21:46

I'm trying to bitstream DTS audio files via S/PDIF and HDMI on a 2010 Mac Mini. I'm using Snow Leopard and 64-bit VLC 1.1.11 and the latest 1.1.12 nightly build.

I have a Denon AV Receiver connected directly to the Mini via HDMI and indirectly via a Creative USB sound card with S/PDIF out. I've tried playing DTS-encoded .ape files directly and I've also tried decoding the .ape files to .wav first.

Here are my results with both file types, and the audio device selections:

Code: Select all

DTS .wav DTS .ape S/PDIF Stereo only DTS 5.1 (hooray) HDMI Multichannel (OK) Noise HDMI (encoded) Crash Noise

As you can see, I can play either file type, but with only one particular audio device. Of the 6 permutations, one works as desired, one comes acceptably close, and 4 fail. VLC really has trouble with these DTS files. I would really like to stream DTS-encoded .ape via HDMI. Can someone have a look at this, please?

Might be fixed in the latest nightly build. Please re-download and try again.

if this doesn't work, I'm afraid that I can't help you since we have neither access to an HDMI-enabled Mac nor to an HDMI-enabled audio setup.

No change. :( I tried manually adjusting the Mac's speaker setup with Auto Midis setup too. Thanks for trying.

I tried the unstable branch too, and I had bigger problems. Please add this problem to the list of known issues, and then I guess it will just have to wait for a developer with some free time to acquire a Mac with HDMI.

BTW, when is the 1.2 branch likely to be regarded as stable? I'm looking forward to a fix it has for playback of .ape files. The current version doesn't play the last second of audio.

Releasing 1.2 will take a bit more time. We'll likely announce beta versions on this forum as soon as we are approaching a more stable state.

It's a pity that it still doesn't work for you, since I've seen various reports of successful Dolby output through HDMI and optical audio (toslink) here including tests on my own...
