Wow, it's great to see that vlc is playing with a new UI however it's a long ways away from being perfect.
I noticed that vlc is utilizing the native fullscreen mode Lion has ushered in. Since I have multiple monitors and I like to have vlc playing videos in the background while I work, I immediately turned this feature off.
The playlist window is stuck where the video plays. So I'm not able to edit the playlist and watch the video at the same time. This is a huge disappointment since I often start a video and add in other videos as the other one is playing (for tv shows or just a playlist).
Bugs:
Still no surround sound via digital out.
when playing a video in fullscreen, and selecting another one in finder, the fullscreen video shrinks to take up 3/4ths of the fullscreen video window exposing my desktop (see image), and also doesn't play the newly selected video but just restarts the one I was playing.
It would appear that it shrinks the screen to the native size of the video. So if I was playing a video that was 1080p and then the next video is 720, the video screen size shrinks to 720p ratio exposing even more of my background wallpaper. I have to double click the video to get out of fullscreen then double click to get back in fullscreen. this is a work around. This always happens with fullscreen videos when playing them in succession. In other words it fits the borderless window the video is playing in to the native video size itself, exposing the desktop behind it and taking away the black bars.

the bottom part of this image is my wallpaper of my dog. The other portion is vlc cropping out the black bars, exposing my desktop, not playing the video selected and breaking when in fullscreen mode.
