suggestion: allow selective advertising on the main page

Hello.
I realize that videolan.org can't allow for google adwords because it would introduce the spammers right?

Suggestion: create a banner on the main page "advertise here"
Then people can contact you and say "I want to advertise this program" so you can only show "selective" banners that are known to be legitimate.

Follow up suggestion would be to tell them to "make you an offer" for how much they'd be willing to pay to advertise there. Accept the highest bidder I suppose

This could bring in some extra revenue, and also allow for:
say I want to support VLC, I could advertise my [other] program for a month and thus get publicity as well as supporting VLC--win win for everyone!)

Anyway just thinking out loud.

I would second this idea. There is nothing wrong with selected advertising - you might actually be glad to hear that some product exists.

Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with selective advertising. VCL is great but the reality is that it takes revenue to advance the features and quality in any technology including VCL. At some point or another people have to be incentivised to produce something of value otherwise they are just wasting time and effort when they could be making big bucks under fascist google or the nazi microsoft.

or maybe VLC could allow for corporate "sponsors" and display their logo on the front home page or the like (see http://twistedmatrix.com/trac/wiki/Twis ... Foundation "google juice" I might even donate to that one )
