stepping forward or back with subtitle display time.

Postby Tim_service » 06 Sep 2011 00:04

I watch a lot of subtitles movies (primarily all I watch) and thought of a feature that I definitely would like and I would think other would as well. Frequently when watching a subtitled movie the subtitles come a bit too quick or simply I am busy looking at the video image and miss a subtitle. It would be really neat to be able to pause the movie and then step the movie forward or back (staying paused) coinciding with the time that a subtitle is newly displayed. This way I could step back a subtitle or two and then forward again so I could get back in sync with the subtitle story line (of course the subtitle would have to be displayed while paused), then press play again and go back to watching the movie at normal speed with subtitles. I find that I usually only get behind in reading the subtitles a couple times per movie, depending on the movie of course.
Thoughts:
The subtitle files have times in them of when they are to be displayed.
Controls could only be displayed when there are subtitles for the video being played.
Would be like indexing through the video with non fixed (subtitle determined) time jumps.

I don't know how feasible this would be but it would be awesome for sure.

Tim.

Hmm, this needs changes in VLC core, but will come soon.

I have a similar request related to subtitles. When changing playback position (moving slider forward and backward or jumps using hotkeys), appropriate subtitle should be displayed if sudden playback position is between start and stop time of that subtitle.
For example with following SRT subtitle if I jump to time 01:06:06, the subtitle should be displayed on a screen:
299
01:06:05,189 --> 01:06:07,703
-What's going on?
-I am tired.

This is the same issue, indeed.

so how do I sound interested but not impatient.

I would love to hear about developments on this idea.
What would be the suggested way to hear things about the possible implementation of this idea into the VLC core?

Thanks
Tim,

PS. I do understand that these things take time, I just see this as such an potentially awesome addition to my VLC viewing experience.

I tried several times to correct the subtitle to go with the movie, I give delay up or delay down simply nothing happens. Before vlc i use smplayer, whe i gave delay up or delay down, work indeed. What would be the problem? I do not think it's normal. :!:

Is there a chance you had a video with hard coded subtitles? If you can not turn the subs off they are likely hard coded. You can not adjust the delay of hard coded subs.

Tim.

Hmm unlikely, for instance with another player, I can give delay to subtitles in the same film.
