GPU Acceleration - cpu usage

Postby dumbo4711 » 14 Aug 2011 23:10

hi

this is not a problem just a small info :-)

i did a small comparison between mpc hc, mplayer and vlc (all latest svn versions)
using a bluray rip mkv file h264-mpeg-4 avc 1920x1080

os: w7 64 bit
cpu: intel e8500
gfx: nvidia gtx260
screen: eizo foris fx2431 (1920x1200)

mplayer: over 50% cpu usage (gpu acceleration should be aktiv but not 100% sure...)
mpc hc without gpu acceleration: about 40% usage
mpc hc with gpu acceleration: 15-20% usage
vlc (nightly from 14.8.) without gpu acceleration: 20-25% usage
vlc with gpu acceleration : 5-10% usage

wonder how vlc requires only so little cpu power :D
(gfx gpu usage is unknown, but gfx fan is not increasing speed during playback, so gfx gpu is not runing at maximum and still only 5-10% cpu power needed :D)

mplayer is inferior to vlc and mpc-hc on Windows, this isn't news at all.

About MPC-HC, I have to say that I am a bit surprised, but maybe MPC-HC does activate some postprocessing by default and maybe their video renderer is better (madshi) but more slow.

seems i made a mistake
mpc hc requires only about 1% cpu power with gpu acceleration
(evr render)

if its better than vlc hmmmm ?
may be image is slightly better with mpc

but vlc has other advantages :-)

i have some mpg video files which make some problems with vlc
once a month i try the latest nightly build and
see if mpg decoder is updated to play the "broken" files :-)

its a bit a "bad" situation
i want to stay with vlc
but normal vlc 1.1.11 has some little bugs
1.2.0 has alot improvements but due to the nature of beeing nightly build sometimes
working parts are broken (like cue file support  )

will be a long evening to find latest nightly build version which was able to read cue files properly
