Converted video is all scrambled.

Oops, I thought I was in the general section before, my bad. I am now!

I'm trying to convert an mp4 file into a format that windows movie maker will accept. I click on save/convert, pick the file, choose where the converted file will be saved, change the filetype to the appropriate type, pick what i want the file to be converted to, and let VLC work its way through the video. The result always looks like this http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/2163/helpgr.png with staticy sound to match. I don't really have much experience converting things, can somebody help me?

We need to know:
Your OS,
Your VLC version,
The MediaInfo detailed information about the source file,
If the source file is playing fine without artifacts with VLC,
The destination format, codecs and parameters you are using, "appropriate type" is too vague,
The full messages log while transcoding (open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the encoding and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin if it's too long).
