Replace cone icon with media related icon!

As almost all my media is associated with VLC I come across the cone icon everywhere on my PC. Seeing as the cone icon is ugly and has no relevance to a media player it would be great to see it get changed. Having looked about on the internet it seems a lot of people really don't like it either.

Please can we have a new icon in v1.2, both for the .exe as well as VLC's file associations? I know there is history behind the cone icon but VLC player really needs to modernise its GUI, and I believe the cone is a good place to start!


For those that are curious as to why a cone was chosen I found this...

VLC was originally developed by students at the École Centrale Paris, it is now developed by contributors worldwide and is coordinated by the VideoLAN non-profit organization. One day, people from the Ecole Centrale's Networking Students' Association came back drunk with a cone. They then began a cone collection. Some time later, the VideoLAN project began and they decided to use the cone as their logo. The cone icon design was changed from a hand drawn low resolution icon to a higher resolution CGI rendered version in 2006.

I got the impression from forums that the icon was not that popular. I guess I was wrong then.

Thanks for the suggestion of the VLC Icon Changer program. I tried it but I get an error message that says... Failed to load icon from the file ‘C…’ (error 0: the operation completed successfully.)
Have you managed to get this program running?

I found a solution that quickly and simply changes all the icons... here are the instructions:

1) run reshack http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
2) click open, browse to the directory and open up vlc.exe
3) in the icon group open up the tree and right click on 1033
4) select replace resource
5) click on open file with new icon
6) then browse to the windows media player directory and select wmplayer.exe then click replace
7) All the icons should now be replaced by the mediaplayer icons (or app of your preference)
Now save the file and log off and back in to windows to refresh the icons
