How can I stream audio from Line In input on my motherboard using VLC?

I read this but I didn't understand what I should choose in the "Capture mode" field.

You would choose your Audio capture device and Configure to select the input. Eg line in.

In "Capture mode" I can only select: a. DirectShow b. DVB DirectShow c. Desktop.
I tried to select "DirectShow" which seems the most sensible, but I don't see "Line In" in one of the check boxes.

Leave at the default Directshow

The input device is in Audio device name, Configure to select input

When I click 'Configure' next to 'Audio device name' nothing happens. And in the checkbox next to it, I only have 'Default' and 'None'.

I take it that you did not sucessfully prove out ( by Playing) your input device as per the link earlier?

If the Configure button comes up with nothing when the Default Audio device is selected, then I can only guess that the (your) audio device is not recognised by VLC. You could try the Refresh button?

So, I find out what was the problem. It turns out the the microphone wasn't connected to the input at all.
Right now it works pretty good and I'll try to stream a feed from another device tomorrow, in order to check if that's works fine.
