I can not play subtitles SRT

After I updated VLC media player from version 1.1.9 to version 1.1.10, I can not see the SRT subtitles. My OS: Windows XP SP3 Professional Edition.

I have a similar issue. In my case, vlc doesn't display any on-screen text information (audio track, subtitle track, etc). Installed 1.1.9 and they show again fffuuu.

If you open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before playback, does it complain something when you open the file?

Oh man, I just tested and find out the problem: I use Arial Unicode MS to show japanese characters (I love anime ñ_ñ), changing the font to any other solves the problem (even other unicode fonts, like unifont).
And about the verbosity level, nothing happens.

I just solved this problem by using Arial Unicode MS font and thanks for your help.

Hello, this is my first post, so I am not sure if I have posted this in the correct area? I have Windows XP installed on my PC.

I am having trouble playing .srt files on my .vob video files. I am having two problems. One with the subtitles not playing, and two with the loop button not working.

1. my srt file (which has the same name as my video file, and which is located in the same folder) won't display on top of my .MPG video file (which I created by using VLC's "Record" button/feature, when recording a DVD) while playing in my VLC player. I can't figure out how to play the .srt subtitle video file on the MPG video file using the VLC player. I have tried a number of things. When I click and drag the srt file onto the active player, which is playing the video file, the + sign is displayed momentarily, (while hovering above the player) indicating it should work, but it doesn't work. I don't know why? Can anyone help me? (I have Windows XP installed on my PC computer.)

2. After converting the video file (with ConvertrXtoDVD4) to a VTS_01_1 .vob file, the VLC loop function/button ONLY works and loops on that one file ONLY! I can not get the loop function button to work on the video files VTS_01_2 , and VTS_01_3 ! Is there a problem with VLC player? I am using VLC version 1.1.10 .

If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

How do I get VLC player to display timecodes from the .srt file?
When I click and drag and drop the .srt file onto the playing .mpg file (which was created by the VLC record button) it does nothing. The plus (+) symbol is present when hovering the .srt file overtop of the active player, but that is it. I don't know how to see if the time codes are showing in the VLC player. The subtitles are not playing, even though when right clicking the audio track is sort of listed, which I have tried checking and not checking with a check mark. It doesn't appear to make a difference. It is like the player is not recognizing the .srt file. The .srt file (or the subtitle file) will play fine on all 3 of the VTS_01_1 , VTS_01_2 , & VTS_01_3 files. The subtitles display perfectly. The problem here is that the "loop" feature does not work properly.

And in regards to the "loop" feature/button, (which works fine on ONLY the first initial VTS_01_1 file, and not on the following VTS_01_2, and VTS_01_3 files) when I try to loop the VTS_01_2 file, instead of looping the video sort of plays in a very slow frame by frame style. My best guess it is a programming error not yet realized by the VLC staff/developers.

Timecodes are shown on right bottom corner (e.g 00:01/00:56). If one of them is wrong (or updates itself in wrong fashion) then the subtitles won't most likely play.

I would refer to the timer in the bottom right corner of the VLC player (when playing a video) as the "video timer/counter". So, yes, the video timer/counter works properly when playing the videos. (If that is what you mean?)

I tried the listed advice above, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

I think the problem is the creation of the .mpg file (which was created by VLC player, by clicking on the record button). If I take the .mpg file and convert it to an .avi file (I can convert it for free using the free open source program called "VideoPad Video Editor"), then when I click and drag my .srt subtitle file onto the playing video via VLC player, the subtitles display perfectly.

So my advice to the developers of the VLC player, is to alter your programming (for the next version of the VLC player) so that .mpg files support the clicking and dragging and dropping of .srt subtitle files.

That is the best that I can figure out at this stage of the game.


The next problem would be that the developers would again have to alter the programming for the next version of the VLC player, and make it so that the second and third (VTS_01_2 and VTS_01_3 . I created 3 video files burning a DVD to disk using "ConvertXtoDVD4") files also support the "loop" feature/button on the VLC player. The first created VTS_01_1 file LOOPS fine, it is the 2nd and 3rd ones that for some reason don't support the "Loop" feature/button on the VLC player. Instead of "looping" the video sort of goes slowly frame by frame.
