dvdsimple versus cacheing

Postby rogerdpack » 03 Jun 2011 20:17

Hello all.

I noticed within the GUI that if you play a DVD with "no-dvd-menus" checked, it changes the play option from "dvd://" to "dvdsimple://" and the "advanced" options from :dvdnav-cache to :dvdread-cache.

So I have a few questions. Am I correct in assuming that playing dvd:// is using dvdnav underneath, and dvdsimple is not (dvdread?)? What is the relationship between dvdnav and dvdread? I think dvdnav uses dvdread internally?

Also I remember that mplayer always tells you to use -no-cache when it uses dvdnav:// as that is more stable with some DVD's. I assume this is not a problem with VLC's "dvdnav-cache" option?

Also mplayer's homepage notes:

"Happy new year! Just a quick note, if you got some DVD's as a gift, mplayer -nocache dvdnav:// might play your new movies better than dvd://.

Does this similarly mean that with VLC some DVD's will play better with dvd:// than with dvdsimple:// ?

Thanks!

Correct, dvdnav uses dvdread.
No menu use dvdread instead of DVDnav.

But the nocache option, I don't think this applies in VLC.

Ok thanks for the responses.
So dvdsimple is still "using" dvdnav underneath, but just without menus?
Thanks!
