Green Bar when GPU Acceleration ON

Postby Typhoon » 13 Apr 2011 22:16

Hello,

[Description]
GPU Acceleration is a absolutely need for me to watch HD Videos without stumbling etc.
But when i activate GPU Acceleration, i have a green bar on the top of SOME videos. Not all.

It seems like, there is a color some centimeters below the others.

My System - Sony Vaio VPCF11S1E:
==>Core i7-720QM 4x 1.60GHz

==>NVIDIA GeForce G330M 1024MB max.2807MB shared memory

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

I made an Update some days ago ... So my Driverversion: 267.76

I'm no professional, but i think its a Problem with the codec, because in other videos it is working correctly.

It is DXVA issue if those green lines only show up with GPU decoding.

Or it could be a conflict between i3 integrated GPU and nVidia

Same Issue with discrete GTX460. Had the issue ever since changed from an 8400 to a GTX460 and has persisted over several drivers and vlc versions
Currently using latest 275.21 beta driver with Windows 6 64bit SP1 and vlc 1.1.9
NVIDIA 3d vision driver is not installed.

Unlike the other poster, using Core2duo with non graphics chipset.

Green bar and incorrect colours only occur when DXVA on and MPEG 1/2/4

Issue has gone away a few times but returned especially when driver changed.

with dxva on and the doom9 h264 bluray test disc:

big buck bunny (1080 h264): no green line or colour issues
elephants dream (1080 h264) : no green line or colour issues
sailing (720 h264) : green line and colour issues

MPC-HC or others do not have this issue

Toggling IVTC in the NVIDIA control panel doesnt help.

I tried several examples each of various sized clips of mpeg especially h264 with dxva in vlc 1.1.9 on and here are the results

1080 OK
1040 green line/colour issues
820 OK
800 OK
720 green line/colour issues
688 green line/colour issues
674 green line/colour issues
576 OK
540 OK
480 OK
400 green line/colour issues
360 green line/colour issues
304 green line/colour issues
288 OK
240 green line/colour issues

Although my result is same as original poster, have attached screenshots as reference.

I would say the previous driver 271 was fine in this issue but I have not rolled back to test this yet, I will soon.

GTX430 here, works fine with 275.21 beta...
Crap.

Can you share a small sample with the issue?

the pegi 18 screenshot is from the following video
http://www.gamershell.com/download_73974.shtml
25MB

but my post was based on several dozen clips from different sources and ages.

The issue seems to be is gone after a reboot, however as I mentioned in my post, this has happened before , the issue can disappear after a while especially after a reboot.

For a time reference, this has been happening since the beginning of march when I changed from the 8400 to the 460, so whatever latest driver and latest vlc at that time.

With the 275 beta installed I proceeded to revert back to 270.61 via a clean install of driver. 270.61 is, latest official stable version

Ran installer, chose clean install, left all modules selected inc 3d vision, installed completed.

Installer did not prompt for reboot

Tried 720p h264. OK.

Rebooted anyway.

Tried 720p h264. OK.

Then ran 275 beta installer, chose custom install and de-select 3d modules.
Installer removes 3d driver/utility and prompts for reinstall
Driver installation continues after restart

Not prompted for a final reboot after install completed.

Tried 720p h264. OK.

The issue can be random, I have mentioned everything I know about my symptons
At least I found this thread and that if it happens again Ill be able tobetterrecall what exactly changed before the issue comes back again

Re: Green Bar when GPU Acceleration ON

Postby kngtrider » 31 May 2011 14:35

Things were fine over the weekend but today I get the green bar/colour issues.

Environment:IE9 open with heavy load of tabs, flash disabled. Was using photoshop CS5 alot today also (both these apps hw acelerated)

I went and tried the latest nightly build and installed it without resetting any preferences, did not reboot nor did i close IE9, to see if it changed anything.

vlc-1.2.0-git-201105321-0126 twoflower did not show the green line/colour issues, however I do not think DXVA was working anyway.

However, unlike the log file i pasted earlier in this thread where DXVA2 is clear and evident, I can't see any mention of DXVA in the log for the nightly I am using so I can not tell if DXVA is actually being used.

I ended up resetting the preferences in VLC nightly, but I still can't tell if DXVA is working.

GPU monitor gadget implies DXVA isnt being used as gpu/vpu are idle so I think it DXVA actually isnt working hence I am not seeing green bar/colour issues

DXVA works fine in stable apart from the issue described that occurs randomly.

When the nightly I tested works and isn't crashing, heres what I could find relevant in the messages so Im guessing based on the log and the GPU monitor DXVA isn't working for me in that nightly build

Code: Select all

vcodec debug: libavcodec already initialized avcodec debug: trying to use direct rendering avcodec debug: allowing 2 thread(s) for decoding avcodec error: ffmpeg-hw is not compatible with ffmpeg-mt avcodec debug: ffmpeg codec (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) started

It gets weirder, I uninstall nightly, install 1.1.9 stable telling it to reset the preferences. Launch 1.1.9 a few times to let it make the cache, start playing properly, and enable DXVA

restart vlc to play with DXVA and it works fine without green stripe
In THIS state, DXVA confirmed working via message log and GPU monitor

Wouldnt suprise me if some of the apps I use that use the GPU are not clearing/reseting the processor properly ?

The following log is me watching IPTV (h264 TS), pressing stop then play.

In this state, DXVA is working and no green bar/colour issues
Since its IPTV, theres drops in the log

same issue here. (Win 7 64bit, Nvidia GT 425M, VLC 1.1.9)

I'm quite sure that the problem is DXVA2 producing chroma shift for videos with height that is not a multiple of 32.
I tried with the last drivers from NVidia (275.33) but nothing changed.

275.33 here but no issue yet

If the issue was permanent it can be relatively easily diagnosed and fixed

But as described through this thread there is an element of randomness and its not obvious whats triggering the issues.

is there a way of pre-processing the video (before GPU decoding) by resizing it to a multiple of 32? (It would be a walkaround)

No. You would have to decode video before you can resize it.

ok, as usual I was too precipitous:
I did't read carefully the message of kngtrider about non-working video heights.
It's not a mod32 problem. 540 works ok.
I must say that I always had the issue. Never happened that it disappeared for some time. and I tried with 3 different nvidia drivers.

Heh. I figured it out !

I upgraded video driver 275.33 when It was released, tested for issue, no issue.
Upgraded VLC to 1.1.10 yesterday, tested for issue, no issue.

Today I was having issues with quicktime streaming so I launched my TV service to verify UDP was working in bulk (its H264 and suffers from the green bar issue as per static files do), got the green bar...

WTF, it was fine yesterday...

So I scanned my desktop to visualize what changed since last night.
I was using some different apps though they use the GPU which at first I was suspicious of e.g. I had Safari running which I normally don't use but I had to make sure nothing else changed also.

I noticed that my power state changed. I have a desktop gadget that can quickly change between the three main windows power management states
The machine in particular I left in 'maximum power save' windows profile last night

As soon as I flipped it to High Performance from Maximum Power Saving, the green bar goes away.

I verified this wasn't a fluke several times by changing states.

I also verified that NVIDIA"s own power management setting wasn't to blame by leaving windows in the maximum power save state and toggling NVIDIA between adaptive and maximum performance. That setting doesn't make a difference.

I'm using the power gadget from orbmu2k.de

THis may explain why some users have the issue permanently and I was not as they were not changing between power states as frequently as I was or at all

Additionally

If I have a video playing in VLC

If i change the power profile WHILE the video is playing from High Perf to Power Save, the green bar/colour shift appears a few seconds after I execute the change
The reverse change does not remove/reverse the colour issues. If i restart the video without closing VLC it will remove the colour issues (after the power profile change) however.

I do not understand how this phenomena could affect video playback at such a low level. One would think the performance of the VPU would be degraded but wouldn't result in any visual anomalies rather than just performance anomalies?

In my case the performance of the VPU seemed correct, just that there was visual anomalies.

Perhaps the power saving is affecting timing and this is interfering with the setup and alignment of the video surfaces but I do not know much about video programming.

EDIT: Reminder that on Vista and 7, power profiles affect PCI-E Link Power status

I never had any DXVA issues with Windows Media Player 12

I need to test MPC-HC now with this scenario as at some times I've had severe playback issues in EVR custom mode at certain times but thats not concern of this forum.
