VLC won't play video over LAN

Postby iisdev » 06 May 2011 12:37

Hi.

On a brand new Ubuntu 11.04 install I seem to be unable to play videos over my LAN with VLC. The error that pops up is this:

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'smb://domain;user_name@windowspc/shared_folder/video.mkv. Check the log for details.
Where is the log I'm suppose to check? Maybe someone can help without the log info? Here's a step by step on what I did:

- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 (brand new install)
- Checked for software updates. Updated.
- Installed Nvidia proprietary driver. Restarted.
- Installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras from Ubuntu Software Center.
- Installed VLC from Ubuntu Software Center
- 'Places' > 'Connect to Server..' supplied credentials to connect to a Window's share on my LAN. Nautilus opens a window automatically.
- select the share in nautilus left pane
- in nautilus right pane right click on video and choose 'Open With VLC media player'
- VLC opens, error is displayed. No video at all.

Videos that are on my *local* hard drive play fine in VLC. It's just ones that are on my LAN.

Also if I try to play the same videos (through the network share) with 'Open With Movie Player' the videos all work.

The credentials I supplied when connected to the share are full access. I can create folders and delete files through nautilus, transfer files, etc..

I don't mind Movie Player but I'd like to use VLC.

Anyone have any ideas? Why would the videos play on the default Movie Player and not in VLC when opened by right-clicking through Nautilus?

Thanks,

Jason
