Logon on FTP Server

Postby mr.sing » 02 May 2011 23:10

Hey VideoLAN Team,

We're operating a ftp server which contains media which could be streamed by VLC.
But when i try to stream a certain file by entering its network address the process results in a error message.

Zusammenspiel im Netzwerk fehlgeschlagen:
Ihr Passwort wurde abgewiesen.
Ihre Eingabe konnte nicht geöffnet werden

it says that the password has been aborted. Whats missing in VLC is the function to enter login information like username and password
for ftp server.
That function would help us a lot!

Greetings

Does it work if you embed username and password to FTP URL?

access_ftp error: cannot retrieve file
main error: open of `ftp://username:password@ftpserver.dyndn ... /media.avi' failed: (null)

Does Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) give more details about the issue?

I just recently set up an FTP server to access video when away from home. I ran into the same problem, but was able to get it working. Here's the solution if you're still looking, and if not here it is anyway in case someone else is having trouble finding the answer.

Option 1. Using a URL that included the username and password never worked. Paste the plain URL into vlc (ftp://ftp.server.com/media.avi) then check the box for "Show more options" Add these two options: :ftp-user=username :ftp-pwd=password. You'll have to do this every time you try to open a file.

Option 2. Alternately, you can go to Tools -> Preferences, set "Show Settings" to "All". Then expand "Input/Codecs", then "Access Modules", and select FTP. There's a spot for username and password. There's also a space for FTP account. I'm not sure what exactly is supposed to go there, but I just put the main FTP server name ftp.server.com. Those settings worked for me.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit with VLC 1.1.10 portable. The FTP is Server 2k8 R2.

Hey,

almost 2 years later, same problem, your "Option 2" worked for me.
Thanks Baka, but guys, isn't it about time to make things easier for vlc ftp access ?

;)
