i'm new to vlc - and thanks for the fantastic piece of software!
what i'd like to know is how to get the --filter wall function to stream some of the segments (say 2 of 4) to another computer?

You can only stream the full movie and then use the filter on the client side. (the filter has an option that allows you to only show some of the wall pieces)
The filter will be ported to our new filter archetecture in the future to allow it to be used to only stream the specific pieces to the clients, but that will not be before 0.8.3

Don't use PMs for support questions.
you could simulate the wall filter client side by using the #duplicate and #transcode (crop) sout modules to cut the different parts. (have a look at the streaming howto, chap3 for more info : http://videolan.org/doc/ )
