Postby AliG » 30 Mar 2011 12:58

I have a problem too :(

When I try to use GPU acceleration, it shows just green screen :?:

using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300, latest drivers,
video is H264 - MPEG-4 AVC
VLC 1.1.8, clean

any idea?

What's your graphic driver version?

I used to have Catalyst 8.4 (driver 8.6 I think), now I have Catalyst 11.3 (driver 8.831.2-110308)

(Direct3D 7.14.10.0817, OpenGL 6.14.10.10600, Catalyst Control Center 2011.0308.2325.42017)

if there is anything how can I help you to improve GPU acceleration, just tell me

I don't think your card supports any GPU decoding with VLC.

is that because VLC is not designed to support this card for some reason? (incompatible drivers/api, just newer cards support)
are there any prerequisites? Only ATi 5xxx and up?

Well, it is not necessary, I will still use VLC ;)
Just MPC-HC does not have any problem, and InternetExplorer9 and FireFox4 can use GPU with this new drivers too.
I know it is not the same, but this cards should be able to manage that ... so if there is any way, how to make it work, it would be cool

4300 should be enough to decode with VLC.
Can you reshow the new logs with 11.3 ?

it is not :( my fault

I've restarted computer, enabled that again and now it works ... probably the driver was not loaded properly ...

I am really sorry, thanks for your help ... and for anyone, who would need that - driver update should be the fix

Thank you for the feature.

I was experiencing some red line appearing from time to time before i enabled GPU acceleration.
VLC never had a problem rendering HD files for me with or without GPU acceleration, but this solved the red line problem :)
I use Q9550 and Asus/Nvidia 9800GTX on a Biostar T-Power I45 MTB.

Hallowed is the VLC.

What screenshot? :D

Anyway, it is experimental, since it doesn't work in all configurations.

I think it would be good for VLC to implement GPU status processing. The log file currently doesn't show if decoding fails.

Also, it would be nice if the renderer would use DXVA as well (ProcessBlt).

Irrelevant of whether it uses the code the VLC developers have put inside FFMpeg, XBMC for Windows runs the high bitrate H264 content I have better, especially the well known killa.sampla. My CPU definitely isn't capable of playing it smoothly so both are using hardware decoding and XBMC handles it far better. Completely smooth whereas there's a fair few judders with VLC.

I'm not slagging off VLC, I love it, it's definitely one of the most useful pieces of software I've ever used across both Linux and Windows.
Yeah, that's because XBMC does also the rendering with DXVA. VLC only does decoding.

No. Only GPU decoding is supported. And it isn't on by default in browser plugins (and since it isn't a safe option, you can't enable it easily).

And that is why it isn't on by default

Guys i'm sorry to bump this thread, but i would just like to ask if there is any method to let my Ati video card to apply the effects listed on the Catalyst program at the video (deblocking, gamma, saturation, so postprocessing in general)? The gpu acceleration is awesome but it really seems that vlc (or the drivers) are not capable of apply the postprocessing. I read the thread and i know that some things vlc's not capable where other player are, trading off this capability with other x^n problem which are strangers in vlc since early versions . Vlc and the drivers are the latest version and the videos are h264 (mkv is the container). Thanks for help and sorry for any MASSIVE amount of ignorance.

Faenz888: I would guess that requires some additional code or isn't supported because of how VLC processes the DXVA.

My GPU option is not enabled in preferences (greyed out, can not be clicked).
And player stutters while playing a high bit rated MKV file.

VLC Player version 1.1.15
Graphic Card: Radeon HD 5550
GPU is only possible on Vista and 7
I am running XP x64(Which is very similar to Windows Server 2003) and have the checkbox available. I also see less dropped frames in the same file by a factor of about 10 after turning on GPU acceleration.

i have been trying to sort out some lines in streams for ages but I just read in http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_GPU_Decoding that XP is not supported guess its time to upgrade my pc to windows 7 !

Video decoding processes which could be accelerated

XvMC for Linux could possibly be extended in the future to support the same processes:

Motion compensation (mo comp)
Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (iDCT)
Inverse Telecine 3:2 and 2:2 pull-down correction
Inverse modified discrete cosine transform (iMDCT)
In-loop deblocking filter
Intra-frame prediction
Inverse quantization (IQ)
Variable-Length Decoding (VLD), more commonly known as slice level acceleration
Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing, (plus automatic interlace/progressive source detection)
Bitstream processing (CAVLC/CABAC)
CABAC entropy decoding is probably not possible to offload on GPU via pixel shader.
NVIDIA and ATI/AMD GPUs use dedicated hardware blocks for entropy decoding.
