A.S.S. Subtitles are displayed in wrong colours

Postby Hoschi » 20 Mar 2011 22:50

Hey guys,

I have a question regarding subtitles. When I want to play a movie with mulitcoloured subtitles (every actor has his own color, etc.) the VideoLAN Player displays the wrong colours. Green is always still green, but yellow becomes cyan and blue becomes some kind of red-brown mix and so on. I have the feeling, that the subtitles are rendered in the wrong colourspace, but I am not an expert, so it's just a guess. I tried other players (MPlayer Extended on Mac OS X and Media Player Classic HC on Windows 7) and they display every colour as it's intended to be. I have uploaded an example to show what I mean.
Is there a way to get the VLC player to display the correct colours? I do not want to use another player on my Windows PC, because the VLC player is the only one who handles the GPU accelleration right and plays every video smooth (I have just an AMD Zacate E350 APU)l. I appreciate every hint or help :-) I have the problem on my Windows PC and on my MacBook, I have asked a friend of mine, he has the same problem on his Windows PC, too. So it's not just me experiencing this issue.

Thanks for your time!

Sincrely
Hoschi

P.S.: Here is the example:

This is the correct colour in MPC HC:

This is the wrong colour in VLC:

Here is a .mkv example: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H6QM5TMU

The funny thing is, that it works just fine on my Windows that I have installed on my MacBook, but not on my Mac OS X installation and not on my Windows installation on my PC. Very strange thing.

This is the script:

Ok, so it might just be the blending that is wrong.

Thank you for your reply. I am really clueless, when it comes to things like that, how do I change the blending? Has it something to do with the subtitle file itself or is it changed in the VLC options?
:-)

Just a small question, did you try deactivating GPU decoding?

I have deactivated the GPU decoding just now and now the subtitles all have the correct colours. Unfortunately, the video playback is not smooth any more on my HTPC.
Is there any chance to get both, GPU decoding and correct subtitle colours, running at the same time? I understand, that the GPU decoding is experimental, but the VLC player always did a great job with that, way better than any other player I have tested.

It sounds like a mix up between I420 and YV12 during subtitles blending then. Do black&white subtitles show correctly?

yes, black and white subtitles are displayed in the correct colours. Thank you for taking the time to look into this :-)

I hope this is the right one. Further down were only frameskips, so I've cut these out. I also marked the part, that looks interesting for this issue bold.

Re: A.S.S. Subtitles are displayed in wrong colours

Postby Jean-Baptiste Kempf » 24 Mar 2011 18:11

blend debug: chroma: YUVA -> YV12
or
blend debug: chroma: RGBA -> YV12

are the culprit.

Can you share the logs with GPU off?
