Scam site selling VideoLAN with SMS fee

Postby Turbis » 20 Mar 2011 03:21

Hello I Google'd for VLC to find it and I was surprised at how the website looked, nothing like I remembered it... And in Swedish.
Downloaded the .exe and realized something was very wrong.

First off, the link was the top search result on Google, in yellow.
This means that they paid Google to have their result shown above all else (in Sweden).

This is the site in question:

vlc dot laddaner dot me
Warning, don't go to this site, I do not take any resposability if you get infected with malware!!!

I pressed the giant yellow button that indicates for me to download the program and it starts downloading as any other file.
Then I install it.
It asks me if I want to install a search engine called "Woofie". Not very strange so far, it's common for installers to ask these kind of questions.

Just untic those, no thanks I want to use mah Google. Click next...
And this is when the s**t hits the fan.
The red text in the picture is my rough translation of what it means.

Now, I didn't send an SMS because I'm not that stupid.
This is what happened when I didn't enter a code.

Now, what does the VideoLAN team think of this?
Would be really nice to hear what your views on this is.
I personally think it's an outright scam!

I would like to note that since posting this, the swedish version of google does no longer have this site as a sponsor link.
