Custom Skins Not Working Correctly (1.1.5)

Postby seoul harvester » 17 Jan 2011 05:39

I have a weird problem regarding any customizable skins that I try to use. The problem is that after loading them and restarting VLC, after one click on any button on the interface the button will stop working completely. Meaning, I click on say equalizer and it works. But if I close the equalizer and try to click the button again, it won't work. This goes for all buttons except the close button and ALL custom skins. The default skin works fine. This is more off an annoyance than anything because this program is so good I will use the default skin no problem. I do however like a lot of the skins so I was just seeing if anyone else has encountered this problem. By the way it is build 1.1.5 and I am running Windows XP, I have also already uninstalled and reinstalled VLC. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

weird indeed. I don't experience such a behavior on a large scale with WinXP and the latest 1.1.6 build, and I don't recall it not working on 1.1.5
You may come across a few alternative skins from the vlc website that have some problems (missing bitmaps, ....) but those are not that many, and problem is then easily spotted (error messages tell you what is wrong)

I'm still seeing what may be an extension of this behavior in 1.1.7. I did a full re-install from 1.1.5 (skipped 1.1.6). Default skin works perfectly. All custom skins have a broken volume change problem except in full screen. Some of the skins I tried had an option to switch to "music" mode, which seemed to work (but no video for those skins in that mode so it's not a perfect workaround).

What do you call a "broken volume change" ? Everything seems to work as it always did.

What is indeed true and unfortunate is that the skins and qt4 interfaces don't provide the same volume measurements :

- qt4 ranges from a 0 to a so called 200 or 400% depending on whether qt-volume-complete is set or not
- default value is false. So it goes from 0 and a 200%

- skins2 ranges from a 0 to a so called 100% which is the maximum attainable value. This 100% is therefore equivalent to what qt4 claims to be 400%. In other words, skins2 doesn't honor the qt-volume-complete, but acts as if it were true, and advertises the maximum value as being 100% instead of 400%.

I'll see if this can be changed for the sake of consistency within vlc.

Patches have just been applied to make skins2 more consistent with qt4 as far as volume is concerned. (both 1.1 and 1.2 series)
Tests and feedbacks welcome with next nightly builds.
