If I remember the story rightly, someone mentioned the GPL was inconsistent with Apple's app store license and Apple decided it was probably easier to pull the application instead of investing legal time in the issue. As I said, that was the story I heard and so the reality is probably a little different.
Until someone does the legal due diligence, we may not see VLC back on the app store for a good while, if at all. Nobody wants to be in legal limbo. Maybe a GSoC project for law students?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue.
