Blu ray licensing question

Postby mdr86 » 10 Feb 2011 15:49

Hi,

I've been following whether VLC might get blu ray support for a couple of months, and as I understand it the main problem is that you need the decryption keys, which to use legally you need a license from Sony, which wouldn't be free, so can't be used in free+open source software.

My question is: DVDs require decrypting. Why is it legal for VLC to decrypt DVDs, but not legal for VLC to decrypt blu ray discs?

Thanks!

Because CSS and Blu-Ray decryption are different.

OK - so it's just differences in the licenses of CSS and AACS, then?

No, in the way they internally work.

OK, I'm confused now...I know they're different encryptions, but why does that make one legal to decrypt and one illegal?
