VLC 1.1.7
Interface - Menus language: American English
Tools - Preferences - Set up associations - Video files - Check .wmv - Click on Apply -> VLC crashes
The next time VLC is started an error message is shown:
VLC media player just crashed. Do you want to send a bug report to the developers team?

In something that may be related:
I have 1.1.7 installed on a Windows XP (Media Center Edition) macine, and .wmv files are definitely associated with VLC. Yet when I go to open a file, .wmv does not show up in the window unless I have the filter set to "All files".
Any suggestions, please?
