Same issue here and I've been hearing that a lot of other people have had this issue for several months now as well from what I've read on different boards. Been happening since the last several updates that I've tried so it seems that it hasn't been addressed so far. It first started in a version of VLCPortable for me earlier this year I believe. I even have the official, most up to date build and it's still doing it which obviously means that it isn't limited to VLCP. Fast loading media players is what draws me in and this is deterring me from watching anything in VLC recently even though VLC is extremely awesome otherwise. Ruins the experience. :(

I have exactly the same problem. Since updating, endlessly waiting for the font building buffer untill VLC actually starts playing. In my language (Dutch) it's called 'lettertypebuffer opbouwen' (to make this topic visible for Dutch users with the same problem). I hope VLC will fix this soon because it makes me wanna change my default mediaplayer too.

Unfortunately, I suspect it's not a problem in VLC but in some underlying library. In any case, we need a patch.

Yep, I've also experienced this little annoyance for months. I reverted to 1.0.5, which is also a very solid piece of software anyhow. So I deactivated update notices and will check for changes every now and then.

There is a solution (in Dutch) at this page:
http://www.helpdeskweb.nl/tutorials/36/ ... n_VLC.html

in short:
1 Open VLC Media Player
2 Go to Tools -> Preferences
3 Click bottom left on 'Everything' in 'view options'.
4 Go to the menu on the left side of the video. Click 'Subtiltels / OSD'.
5 Choose 'On screen display' at 'Text display module' the values 'Dummy Textvieuw'.
6 Choose 'Save'.

Sorry for the sloppy transalation, I just want to watch my video, but also want to help you guys...
