Switching between two sound cards ?

Postby purgm » 29 Jan 2011 16:24

Good day,

I'm running vlc on my "mediacenter" computer and I was wondering if it's possible to switch between the sound card to which the speakers are connected and the usb sound card to which my headphones are connected without going in preferences and changing the alsa device name. So basically I want to switch while watching (hotkey) or when running from command line (vlc -aout alsa ... maybe ?) since my interface is written in pygame and i'm running vlc as a subprocess.

In principles, you can do that with Audio -> Audio devices. But in my experience, this is not very stable. PulseAudio is a better idea here.

Thanks, didn't know I could do that with PulseAudio...
pacmd "set-default-sink <sink-index>"
pacmd "list-sink-inputs"
and
pacmd "move-sink-input <input-index> <sink-index>"
work like a charm
