VLC bug focus mac os x since version 1.1.1

Postby tonust » 16 Jan 2011 16:03

Hello,

With VLC 1.1.0 everything is perfect but with next builds it's broken : it's not possible to
quit VLC when I'm using the menu 'quit' from dock icon ( if the focus is not on VLC - for example on the finder)
Please someone could send this bug to the developers ?

1.1.5 After choosing Quit, VLC doesn't react until the mouse is moved. Absolutely minor problem, not worth bovering

Problem still around with VLC 1.1.7

If you Quit from the dock icon while VLC is not the foreground app, it won't quit until you select VLC to bring it forward.

IF VLC is the foreground app and you quit from the dock icon, it won't quit until you move the mouse pointer over the VLC interface.

Fixed in VLC 1.1.9, which will be released later this week.

This problem persists in VLC 2.0.1, and has never been fully addressed.

Simple way to reproduce it 90% of the time. Set up Audio Hijack to use VLC to record something off the internet. My typical case is to use VLC to open the following AppleScript as a .scpt file:

---------------------
tell application "VLC"
activate
GetURL "http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wqcs/ppr/wqcs.m3u"
play
end tell
---------------------

I use an AppleScript because, at least when I set up this recording, it was the only way to get VLC to open the URL I wanted and play the stream.

Also, set Audio Hijack's schedule Actions to Record, Mute, and Quit Source. I also set it to Quit Audio Hijack Pro.

Schedule a recording. A few minutes is enough. Everything records fine. 90% of the time, when the recording is done, VLC remains visible until I move the mouse over its window. It is still running and playing the stream, though it quits immediately on a mouseover. Subsequent Audio Hijack sessions do not record until I manually quit VLC by pointing to the "dead" window.

This all worked fine until a 1.x revision of VLC. I believe 1.1.1 was the last one to work, and I'll be reverting to that version, since I've lost many shows I intended to record.

Thanks for listening. I think VLC is fantastic, but my main use for it is broken.

P.S.: I wrote that the problem wasn't present in version 1.1.1. I was incorrect. I was able to reproduce the problem in 1.1.1, but not 1.0.5. This is the Universal version, and I'm running Snow Leopard.

Hi -

Reading the forum I learned that this bug is quite old meanwhile.
I am recording broadcasts with Audio Hijack Pro and VLC 2.0.2.
When recording >1 broadcast VLC doesn't quit after the first one ("Quit source" is set in AHP) and AHP can't catch VLC for the second recording.
This problem doesn't happen with other software like iTunes, RealPlayer, QuickTime et.al.

Quite annoying.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Going deeper into the problem I found

I can quit VLC with "cmd q"
I can quit it with a script.
But Audio Hijack Pro can't stop it when any script or prog is called from there.
So I don't know who can fix it - Smile or VideoLan.
But this problem doesn't occur with RealPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime, Clementine etc.

Mr Kuehne, could you please check?

I usually don't read so old threads.

anyway, I got no idea how to fix your problem. Did you try to contact the developer of the other app?

You don't read them when they are young either?

This problem doesn't happen with other software like iTunes, RealPlayer, QuickTime et.al.
So it is appropriate to look at VLC.
And - I am not the only one with this problem.

Well, frankly, VLC responds correct to Apple Events asking for termination, which is also why you can quit it from within the app switcher or through an AppleScript.

VLC does not respond to the UNIX-like SIGKILL event (see ticket 6354).

I have no idea how the people behind AHP implemented the app termination mechanism. A UNIX guy would use SIGKILL, a Mac guy would use AppleEvents.

Seems like there are 2 options:
The ticket mentioned above will be fixed (this is not likely, since I'm not aware of a proper solution) or AHP sends VLC an AppleEvent instead.

The culprit was MTLAgent (here introduced by Text Tools.)
The problem seems to be solved:
