what do you mean by "broken font files"?
Broken font file is broken in sense that fontconfig cannot parse the properly. IIRC this can be spotted with Process Explorer which shows that VLC is accessing same font over and over again
could it be related to Extensis Fusion and/or Bonjour?
I don't think so.

I created a ticket a while back...no progress though.
http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/3950
From what I understand, fixing that bug isn't a priority since it is seen to only affect corporate users. I can understand that given that the developers are volunteers. However, corporate aren't the only people affected by that issue. It also affects schools and colleges who routinely use redirected AppData folders.

We don't typically have the financial resources to hire a developer to fix any given issue, and it's been a long time since I was a professional coder, so suspect I wouldn't be much use even if I was familiar with the source. I do have a perfectly serious question though if a capable developer is reading this: what level of donation/remuneration would we be looking at to have this fixed? I know of several school network managers who would love this to be fixed, and it's not inconceivable we could club together the cash.

Not much. I think this problem can be solved in about 2 working days.

It used to work ok with roaming profiles as well.
They only appear to have broken this functionality in the last update in 1.1.5 as it always used to work fine. It just cannot handle the path properly. Most probably a simple fix but when Adobe did the same thing with the Adobe Reader it took them over a year to fix it. :(

This would be nice if there was a "Dummy font renderer function", but not in 1.1.5 that I can see.
It should be there. At least I have it.

worked for me (so far at least). thanks I been frustrated with this for a while, I add fonts all the time as I'm working with graphics.

Disabling Building Font Cache dialog of VLC Media Player

1.Open VLC Player, From Tools Menu click Preferences,

2. On the left pane at the bottom, select All as option to show under “Show Settings” ,

3.Now expand Video entry on the left pane and select “Subtitles/OSD” option under it.

4. On the right pane, for Text rendering module choose “Dummy font rendering functions” and click Save.

i am also noticing this phenomenon... my cache file name is almost identical, save the last digit: \\\d031bbba323fd9e5b47e0ee5a0353f11-i686.cache-3.

as it happens, i have experienced videolan 1.1.7 rebuild the font cache twice... possible connection?

first occurrence was *.wmv, second *.flv

videolan does not need to rebuild font cache to reopen previously opened files of a type.

Is this issue resolved? It's still happening for me. Whenever I try to open any file, a message will pop up saying "rebuilding font cache"; then the player crashes. I haven't been able to use the program at all for at least a week. I'm running Windows Vista, newest version of VLC.

These font cache things happen to me often because I sometimes install fonts.
I am a graphics designer at best. :)

Issues should hopefully be fixed in VLC 1.2.0 (cache is gone)
