Playing 1080p video on a higher res monitor

Postby Long Hot Summer » 07 Jan 2011 22:51

Besides 1920x1080 there are monitors with a slightly higher resolution (1920x1200 (WUXGA) and 2048x1152). I often play video with a resolution of exactly 1920x1080 and since a 1920x1080 monitor is a perfect fit, does that mean it's better than a monitor with a slightly higher resolution for these videos? Because 1920x1080 can translate the pixels 1:1 and the others have to somehow convert it. Is that right?

Thank you.

When the display resolution does not match the video resolution, VLC will arrange for adequate scaling. In most cases, scaling is performed directly by the Graphic Processing Unit (i.e. the video adapter), so the quality will depend on the GPU model. But obviously, it cannot be perfect unless the display resolution is a multiple of the video resolution, which it is not in your case.

when your screen has 1920x1200 resolution
a hd video with 1920x1080 will be played 1:1
black bars (each 60 pixels high) will be on top and bottom of the screen

when the video resolution is smaller or equal as the screen resolution
the video can be played 1:1 without interpolation (no convertion needed)
the "remaining screen" will just be black
