Difference between mov and mp4 encapsulation

Postby richardkfk » 30 Dec 2010 04:40

When I use the VLC115 to convert a MPEG2 PS file to H264 file in order to be played on my DiVX+ certified DVD player , iPhone , or Cube Media player, I can choose either mov or mp4 encapsulation.

I understand mp4 (part 12) originated from Apple mov encapsulation format.

In VLC115 , is there any document mentioning the difference between mp4 and mov encap. ?

Does VLC1.1.5 mp4 encapsulation refer to ISO14496 part 1 or part 12 or part 14 ?

cheers n regards,

I would guess it is part 14, but I am not sure. There is no documentation related to this in source code

Thanks !

Recently, most movie encorders can use the Video Card's GPU (eg. NVIDIA® CUDATM technology ) to accerlerate the encoding time.

Will VideoLAN plan to support this feature ?

Not anytime soon. If FFmpeg devs do some development related to this, it might end in VLC also.
