Guide to build a VLC Server on a Linux Web Server

Postby Nickalf » 25 Nov 2010 11:36

Hi All VideoLANers,
I'm planning to build a Webcasting and Video Streaming service that I can start using on our exciting Walk Across America project that starts Jan 15th 2o11 - http://TheWeTour.us

I've looked at several options and services ranging from $25/mnth to $3,500/mnth (ouch) and realize that it's a project I can do myself instead and VLC looks like it could be a good fit if I can get a little help from some experts - if you are willing to spend some time to help.

Please let me know if you can spare the time, give some guidance and get, in return, our thanks and some recognition as a Tour Sponsor..

I've tested camera connection locally with success, so the next phase is install and configure on my Ubuntu Web Server..

If in NJ, I run http://MeetUp.com/Webcasting and NJLinux User Group, so we could also 'get together' over coffee (or something stronger :D ).. Could be fun..

With hope and fingers crossed,
Nick. . .

Take a look here...

http://wiki.videolan.org/Stream_VLC_to_ ... _and_Flash

Method 2, H264/Flash works well on Ubuntu 10.04 + VLC 1.0.6 with complete version of ffmpeg (ffmpeg extra-52 & x264)
The comment and example regarding linux versions only applies if using a stripped version of ffmpeg in earlier versions of Ubuntu which are unable to encode in h264. in their standard form
You are going to need plenty of upstream bandwidth from your webserver, circa 250K per client for live stream in h264/Flash depending on the quality required
