How to add subtitles to a transcoded file ?

Postby Clafoutis » 17 Nov 2010 18:23

Hi!

I have a video file myvideo.avi
I have a subtitles file myvideo.srt just besides

I want to "paste" the subtitles on the video and get one "hardcoded" subtitled file. Could you please write me a sout #transcode line that will do the job ? I am so lost in command lines...

Thank you very much for helping me!

search for "subtitles files" might help

Many thanks for this fast reply!

What I would like is re-record the file so that the subtitles become part of the movie, not a separate file, and I can then change the whole into a home dvd unit (or Sony PS3) readable disk. I suppose some command-line transcode operation would do this blending, the only problem is that I cannot find my way to do this. Could you show me how to do ?
(forgive my bad english, I am french...)

Thanks again!

theoretically if you instruct it to play subtitles, transcode, and save to file, it "might should" work

useful links:
http://wiki.videolan.org/Transcode
http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation: ... m_with_VLC

Another option is the "record" button to do the same...

Practically, if I could do it myself without help I would not ask. How do I "instruct" VLC do blend subtitles into the saved file ?

I saw some of the old-time bugs are still around on the VLC 1.1.5 version, french interface I got, but I see no new record button. Maybe because I use a Mac and not a PC ?

I'm not sure about the record button being absent (it's there for me) http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2686/how ... h-vlc-1.0/

I'm not exactly certain what the command line might look like (anybody?)
http://wiki.videolan.org/What_can_vlc_d ... _subtitles might help
if you can get it working right (playing right) in the GUI, you should be able to use the "messages" to determine what settings the GUI is creating http://wiki.videolan.org/Basic_Troubleshooting and then use those on the command line. Sorry I can't be of more help

These are snapshots from windows interface, I run a Mac and it looks quite different.

As i have something like mymovie.avi and mymovie.srt in the same folder/directory, VLC nicely displays the subtiltles. So far, so good. Now, how can I save to disk the subtitled movie, I cannot find in the messages window.

And yes, you help a lot. This is not easy to find one's way in VLC mechanics...
Thanks a lot!

To whoever may be interested : to hard-dub a movie file, get the moviefile.avi (or another video format) and the corresponding subtitles file moviefile.srt in the same folder, use ffmpegX (with extra installs), check the filters pane to enable subtitling and proceed.

File menu -> Streaming/Exporting wizard might also help (apparently there's no record button in OS X default GUI?).

Return to “VLC stream-output (sout)”
