Saving Transformed Video

Postby Devil-Jin » 16 Aug 2009 03:51

Hey guys. Noob question:

I want to use VLC to transform (rotate, etc.) videos which I upload to my computer from a camcorder. I have been playing around with different transformations (under Tools --> Effects) but I cannot find any way to save the video once I transform it. How can I do this?

Thanks in advance

Media -> Convert/Save... and you have to transcode the video (and also enable filters from Tools -> Preferences... to make them apply to transcoding).

I'm having the same problem, which is why I signed up on this forum. Googling for a few days didn't help, but what you've said here got me one step closer. I've enabled the filter, so it plays with the modifications, but when I go to save it, the result is a copy of the original - without the mods. I guess I'm not sure what "transcode the video" means and hope you (or someone) can explain it in "for dummies language" Please, take it easy on me - I'm not young, I'm years from any kind of school and am just stumbling my way through stuff like this.

You just select some profile (like Video - WMV+WMA (ASF)) and VLC should do the rest. Also playback and transcoding filters are on different sections (above and below each other) so you can have different filters for playback and for transcoding (e.g. you can stream upside down video but watch normal in your computer).

First of all, thank you for the quick reply.
Buuut...That's what's got me confused. I saw that there were 2 sets of filters and have tried checking just the top filter, just the bottom filter, and both top and bottom. I've also tried every video profile and the final file is always a copy of the original. So maybe there's something else I'm missing, so I'll give some details.

I'm trying to turn some family movie clips (avi file type) into cartoon-like videos. So I'm using the gradient filter, which is set to Gradient (not Edge or Hough) and Apply cartoon effect is checked. But I don't understand what "Gradient Image Type" means. By default, it's set to 0. Does that number need to change and, if so, to what? I then hit Save, and have tried running the video immediately and also shutting down VLC and restarting the video, thinking that might make a difference. Another thing that baffles me is that having both gradient filters checked, top and bottom, the video doesn't play. I've now reset all preferences twice and started over, but I always wind up back at the same place - Lost : - /

Gradient video filter
--gradient-mode={gradient,edge,hough}
Distort mode
Distort mode, one of "gradient", "edge" and "hough".
--gradient-type=<integer [0 .. 1]>
Gradient image type
Gradient image type (0 or 1). 0 will turn the image to white while 1
will keep colors.
--gradient-cartoon, --no-gradient-cartoon
Apply cartoon effect (default enabled)
Apply cartoon effect. It is only used by "gradient" and "edge".
(default enabled)

Another thing that baffles me is that having both gradient filters checked, top and bottom, the video doesn't play.
Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) shows some error messages?

I'm sorry, but I did say I was about as newbie as they come. I don't understand what you mean by the first part of your reply and I think I might be in over my head. The link you provided might as well be the commands to launch a satellite as I can't make heads or tails out any of it. Are you saying I have to enter commands somewhere to effect the changes I'm looking to make?

As far as the second part, no, I'm not getting an error message - the video just doesn't play. VLC opens like an audio file, with the time line slider moving, but no video. And now that's happening when I have only the transcoding filter enabled.

It's hell to be old. I can remember when we were told computers would make our lives simpler. So far, I've found very little that's simple when it comes to doing something on a computer. But, if you'll bear with me, I'll try to tough this one out. I have a niece and nephew who get the biggest thrill out of watching themselves look like drawings and I'd love to be able to give them the videos to watch over and over again.

The first part explains the options you asked.
But I don't understand what "Gradient Image Type" means. By default, it's set to 0. Does that number need to change and, if so, to what
And for second part, you have to open Messages before you try to do anything else.

Media -> Convert/Save... and you have to transcode the video (and also enable filters from Tools -> Preferences... to make them apply to transcoding).
Let me say again my question and my request : PLEASE DETAIL THE WHOLE PROCEDURE STEP BY STEP! MAKE IT FOR DUMMIES !
i understand your comments as if you had say : get in an Appolon rocket, press the red pale purple buttons, the 150th one on the left when you enter the room just after the loos... not sure to get it right!

Maybe you guys know all by heart the options and menus, but each time i want to make it with instructions over the net, it does not work !

so i have an AVI file with i dont know which codec or videc or anydec, and i just want to rotate it (90, 180 or 270) : what shoud i do to get an AVI file well rotated and readable with the right angle, anywhere else!

I have read so many comments on "how to rotate and save a file with VLC" over the net, with NO good procedure, i even wonder if VLC can do it, can it?

I have the same set of questions. I dk if VLC can edit video or you just have to adjust each time you want to play the clip.

Please advise.

You can create new video file with VLC that has the effects applied. But since you need transcode, quality will go lower if you use lossy encoders.

I'm a newbie, and dk how to create a new video file with effects applied. Dk what transcode is either or encoders for that matter. I asked on another post if there was a VLC tutorial somewhere, and I'll ask again here. Is there?

AFAIK there are command-line tutorials, not GUI ones.

OK, but can you post the steps that one should follow to accomplish it?

Hey guys,

Reviving an old thread... I followed this and the other links given, but still not quite getting it. If you were to reset your preferences completely, click-by-click what would one need to do to get the filters saved? Also, I noticed that there's a "Rotate video filter" checkbox under the video filter options in the transcode stream output options, but that affects the Rotate filter and not the Transform filter. I do not see a checkbox to activate the Transform filter. Any help would be appreciated, but I'm not CLI savvy at all and would think the general newb community could benefit from a friendly walkthrough. Thanks for your time.

You cannot save certain setting via GUI. Only option is to manually copy them from %appdata%\vlc\vlcrc

Transform is Video transformation filter in Qt GUI.

So obviously none of you have CS degree or masters of any type of computing programming language.
All their help guidelines are basically for advanced gurus to input command lines.
There needs to be help using and showing GUI (e.g. a visual walkthrough/actual instructions (click here/go there).

Although the command lines can and do give you quick access towards changing the settings, like 99%+ of the people don't know how to even use such language.
Let's just get right to it:
Okay first, I am using VLC version 2.0.4 (that is the most current as of this writing (12/13/2012))
Make sure the original video plays via VLC. Generally, AVI files don't play. I asked Jean (one of the VLC support team) and he told me that VLC just doesn't support it.
Now if you know the original video works with VLC, you can proceed.

1) Open VLC and go to the menu bar and select the Tools tab.
2) Click on Preferences (it's at the very bottom of Tools)
3) In the Preferences box, go to the very bottom left corner and you'll see a "Show Settings" box. There are two options: Simple and All
Select All
4)At the left side you'll see that there are many preference options. Scroll down with the left scroll to where it says "Stream Output". Beneath that are sub-options for Access output, Muxers, Packetizers, SAP, and then Sout Stream (you may need to click the little sideways triangle next to Stream Output (just to the left)). I want you now to click on the little sideways triangle next to Sout Stream.
5) You will now see a select of options for Sout Stream (Delay, Display, ES....). At the very end of this list is the option for Transcode. Click on that!
YES!!--I think you know where this is leading to now!
6) The title "Transcode Stream Output" should display. If you scroll down using the main scroll (the scroll bar to the right) just a little bit, you see options for various video filters. Select the ones that you want to edit your film/video with. This might not be obvious. For me, the "negate colors" function is the "Invert Video Filter".
Likewise, beneath the "Video" selection is the Audio selection and you can edit your video with audio filters as well. I also recommend "De-Interlacing" the video. It is at the very top when you first enter Transcode section. I don't know if it'll help, but I selected it (seems to help).
7) HIT SAVE!! Surely, you don't want to have to remember where to head back to and re-do everything (unless of course you might have done something improper or suspect something is wrong or accident).

I have this offset because this might all you need to know and the rest you may already know.
Anyhow, the next step is to now edit your video.
8 ) Now that all the settings are good, get out of that preferences window and back to the main menu.
Go to the Menu bar and click on the Media tab.
9) On the Media tab, select the Stream option (it has a little wireless icon to the left of it).
10) The "Open Media" box will now appear. Go ahead and browse for the file you wish to edit/alter by selecting "Add" under the "File" tab.
11) Once you've completed that, click "Stream" at the bottom right.
12) This should bring up the "Stream Output" box. From there select the option "Next". This is right above two options for "Stream" and "Cancel".
13) This is the part that might be most important for most of you. VLC will now request you for the "Destinations" you wish to select. There are several but I only recognize File and HTTP. You probably just want the file so select "File" from the menu selection across from "New Destination" and click "Add". This will bring up the File tab you have just requested. Click "Browse" and look for a location you want to save your video to. You will need to enter the name of the video and add the file extension you want to have (.flv, .mp4, .mov, .wav, etc...). Now it is ready! -- If you want to upload to the internet, just select HTTP and enter the Port and Path.
14) After this is completed, you may very well need to change some of the transcoding options under "Transcoding options". In fact, you might need to check the settings.
You should select the video profile you want your video in (MP4, WMV-WMA (ASF), etc....). Next to that, there is a tool function (screwdriver/wrench). Click on that.
15) You should bring up a box called "Form". It will contain 4 tabs (Encapsulation, Video Codec, Audio Codec, Subtitles). Go to "Video Codec" and make sure the box for "Keep original video track" is unselected. Otherwise, you transformation will not work. I suggest here that you enter the bitrate and framerate that you had on the original video so that you can mitigate any potential losses in quality.
16) Be sure to hit SAVE so you don't lose this settings.
17) You may select "Next" to view the "Options Setup" window, but there isn't anything to do there. IN FACT, I believe that is where you would have entered the codes that they gave you!!!
18) Now you are all done. Just select "Stream" at the bottom right of the box and it will stream the video for you.
19) After the video is done streaming, it will show up in the location you selected for the destination, but you will not be able to play it until you close the VLC player. After you close the VLC player, the video icon should display and your video is ready for viewing.

YESS!!!!!!!!!!! That worked for me and should work for you.
and YESSSS!! that was lengthy but it is much more detailed that what they provided and you should help you out.
If any problems, you betcha I probably can help.

Good luck and happy viewing!!

Cartoon Procedure

Cartoon Procedure
shootingrubberbandsatthestars

I just saved my first cartoon in VLC and i am thinking that my experience might be helpful to others. I am using Windows 7 64 bit with VLC media player 2.0.5 Twoflower and i recently downloaded and installed K-Lite Codec Pack x64 (though 64 bit was not the only option) to help out with WMM6 and Wax 2.0

I started a project, and when i saw the cool cartoons that are in the VLC viewer it occurred to me i should get CARTOON if i possibly could. And i did. I have only made one so far so,,, heheh Let me just write what i did.

I opened VLC and clicked on TOOLS / PREFERENCES
I cleared all my previous attempts by clicking the RESET PREFERENCES button at the bottom of the dialogue.
I closed VLC and reopened, and went back to TOOLS / PREFERENCES,
I did some clicking and dragging of the corners of the Preferences dialogue and made the dialogue big on my monitor.
In the lower left hand side i clicked on SHOW SETTINGS and then clicked the radio button for ALL.
The ALL list displayed in the left hand pane,
In the left hand pane under Stream Output i clicked the plus sign beside SOUT STREAM and then i clicked on TRANSCODE which changed the right pane.
In the right hand pane i checked the checkbox next to HURRY UP and GRADIENT VIDEO FILTER,
I went back to the left pane and under Video i clicked the plus sign beside FILTERS which changed the right hand pane.
In the section VIDEO FILTER MODULE i checked the checkbox next to GRADIENT VIDEO FILTER,
then in the section VIDEO SPLITTER MODULE i checked the checkbox next to GRADIENT VIDEO FILTER,
back in the left hand pane i found the VIDEO / FILTERS / GRADIENT and clicked Gradient, which changed the right hand pane,
In the upper right hand corner of the right pane I clicked on the pull down ad selected EDGE.
I believe that by default the checkbox is checked for APPLY CARTOON EFFECT,
Down in the bottom right hand corner of the PREFERENCES dialogue i clicked SAVE.

A note on terminology. In VLC what the writer's are meaning is SAVE when they write the word STREAM. In WAX when the writer writes the word RENDER he means SAVE.

I then went in VLC to MEDIA / STREAM
(which displays the Open Media dialogue) with the Tab FILE on top,
I clicked ADD on the right side and Select one or Multiple Files was displayed.
Previously i had made a folder on my C: drive named 0001, and also i had stored a video in that folder named 0001.mpg so the list area then read:
C:\0001\0001.mpg
then i clicked the STREAM button down at the bottom right hand corner,
this displayed the STREAM OUTPUT dialogue, i clicked the NEXT button,
this dynamically changed the dialogue and i clicked the ADD button,
which dynamically changed the dialogue again and i clicked the BROWSE button,
the SAVE FILE dialogue was displayed, so i navigated back to my folder on the C: drive (C:\0001) and then wrote with in the FILE NAME text entry box with the keyboard 0001.mp4 [and you can see how many types of files this software can handle in the box Save as File Type].
I clicked OK,
On the bottom of the STREAM OUTPUT dialogue i clicked on the pull down menu and selected:
Video - H.264+MP3(MP4)
I thn clicked NEXT
In the upper left i checked the checkbox next to: Stream all elementary streams,
The textarea below read: :sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=0,scale=0,acodec=mpga,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:file{dst=C:\\0001\\0001.mp4} :sout-all :sout-keep
and i clicked the STREAM button at the bottom, and at that point VLC started to "stream' the file after which i TURNED OFF VLC, and went to my C:\0001 folder and clicked in my first CARTOON in video.
