App doesn't work for iPod Touch 2nd gen running 4.1

Postby hugoread » 27 Oct 2010 00:00

Hi there,

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation with the latest firmware (4.1) and with great anticipation I went to download the VLC Media Player app, but unfortunately I'm told by iTunes that the app is not compatible with the combination of 2nd generation iPod Touch and the latest firmware (4.1).

I'm hoping this is just a bug that will be fixed in the next version? I'm really looking forward to using the app when it starts working on my iPod.

Yours in anticipation,
Hugo Read.

For performance reasons, VLC for iOS requires an iPad, iPod touch 3rd or 4th generation or iPhone 3GS/4.

We tested the code on 3G iPhones (equivalent to a 2nd generation iPod touch) and found that little to no videos would be played back correctly. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to enable support for these devices... Please note that 3rd party products such as VLC are currently unable to use the hardware acceleration included in iDevices (used by the default QuickTime player), so it will never be as fast as it could be unless Apple provides the needed API.

The 3rd generation iPod touch should be supported as it is basically the same hardware as the iPhone 3GS...

You can easily check your iPod's generation by having a look at its backside. On 3rd generation iPod touches, the model number is A1318, while it is A1288 for the 2nd generation.

If your device is a 3rd generation iPod, then I've got no idea why this doesn't work. Restoring the iPod and/or resyncing the app with iTunes might help though.
