if you're running OS X.

close VLC (make sure it's not running)

Go to the system search and type in "VLC".

look for and delete the file named "org.videolan.vlc.plist"

empty the trash.

VLC should relaunch with the preferences reset to default.

The same basic principle applies if you're using another operating system.. you need to find and clear the preferences, obviously an advanced option has been set to an invalid value.

Have a look at the FAQ if you use another OS. It tells which files you need to delete. BTW. On OSX, you need to delete the folder "VLC" as well, because the plist is not enough. In most cases the plist can even stay there while the folder needs to be deleted.
